I just bought a 2002 es300 from the dealer and it has a bad back middle speaker. I have been doing some research to see how I can get back to it and have a look to see if I can just fix it myself. It sounds like I have to remove the bottom of the back seats, then the backs, and the the shelf? that covers the top of the speaker and back window area. The dealer said the labor to get back there to change the speaker is $250 and I feel like I can do it for free. If anyone knows if this is right, has any experience is doing this, or any advice...that would be great! Thanks for the help!

Hey I just got done running Amp wires to the trunk myself on my 02. Anyways, the bottom portion of the backseat comes off really easily, then it gets a little harder.

I then removed the seat back by giving it a few upward and firm blows after removing all 4 bolts. The 3 attachment areas are circled in yellow, while the 4 bolts aren't pictured.

Rear seat attachment picture #2.

From there you will have access to the plastic shelf where the speaker's grille is located.

Might be better off just running your own sub back there and disconnecting the mounted one though. It won't require you to take off the top of the back seat.

It wasnt to hard getting back to the speaker. The only tough part was getting the back of the seats back on. Lifting them up high enough to catch was a little tough. Looked at my speaker and it is dead(aka blown). Luckely it was still under warranty when I found the problem so the dealer better fix it for free! Thanks again for the help

Ahh that's sweet that it's still under warranty!

I am pretty sure mine is blown too! Luckily I disconnected it and have an 8" Kicker back there!

No problem by the way. You should post some pics of your ES!

Yea they gave me a one month warranty. The only problem is that I brought it in a week after I got it to check the speaker and they said that when they got a used car that had the same speaker, that they would call me and just swap it. Its been a couple of weeks now and I havnt heard anything. I have two 10 inch speakers in a box with a 1200W amp that I have just sitting around my apartment. The only thing is that if I put it in this car, it will take up a lot of space in the trunk cause the box is big. If I had the time to make a less space consuming box then I will probably put them in.
