Compatable engine question...
First off, this is my first post so HI!
Ok now my question is. I had just picked up a 93 es300 in mint condition except for the engine makes a nasty knocking sound for a fairly good price. I suspect it to be rod knock. Anyway what other engine/s can I put in there? Will the Toyota Camry engine work? They seem to be very similar if not the same but can anyone confirm?
TIA!

So I would have no problem putting a 95 engine I found into? I hear the 92-93 engines have a cast iron block and the newers ones are aluminum? I just want to be sure.

Rod damage is extremely rare on a 3vz-fe. Inspect for other damage. I highly doubt you have a rod knocking.[quote]
Its really loud, sound speeds up as engine rpm climbs and a big power loss....
You must use a 3vz-fe. 92-93 ES/Camry in North America. In other parts of the world they were sold through 97.5 in places. You can't not use any other engine without swapping everything out.
I still dont't think it's rod knock.

Is there a place where the engine code is stamped? I need to find one asap. Im pretty sure it was a rod bearing since I started it today and rev it up a little and BOOM out goes the rod out the back of the block.
I appreciate your help!
There's nothing you need to know. The 1mz-fe for North American cars are 94+. You MUST have a 92-93 Camry/ES v6 if you buy an american one.
Most of us would buy a JDM 3vz-fe. They're normally lower mileage & easier to buy. 92-93 North American v6's are next to impossible to find.
If you have emessions testing, you'll need to swap your current exhaust manifold, intake manifold & EGR pipes over. If you don't have emessions testing F-it.
That's the strangest thing I've ever heard. It's a >300lbs iron block, and rods that will handle well over 450bhp.
Oh well, can't win 'em all I guess!

The engine code is usually "stamped" on the timing belt cover (as for the 3vz-fe). "The black plastic cover." I just got my 30-50K JDM 3VZ-FE for $748 @ attarco. But it's only the head and the block, no intake plenum parts, harmonic balance, etc. So I just used my old parts. The motor's already in my car, and it is up and running again. I found some 100K 3VZ's at the salvage yards but they wanted $800-$1000. It seemed like a rip off because those motors are already used for so long.
Here's a picture of the motor from the side. And the "3VZ-FE" is usually not white, it's supposed to be imprinted on the t-belt cover.

Check it's VIN, or buy one from an engine importer. There are a bunch of importers online. There's like 2-4 always on ebay.
All 3vz-fe & the SOHC trucks also have a big huge 3VZ stamped on the front (Left hand) side of the block.

You can see it there on the top left of that picture.

when i bought my 96 i had a similar sound.....it was a blown(or chipped lifter) but it was written into the contract and was fixed before i picked up the car.
and im not the most mechanically inclined but it was a 1" diameter cylander piece with a lip. the chip was out of the lip. . anyways good luck!

As mentioned above. Stick with the 3VZ-FE that you have in your ES...or Camry V6 model (92-93 ONLY). The JDM versions do not have an EGR assembly since they do not require such emission components on their vehicles.
The 2VZ-FE (Camry/ES) and the 2VZ-E (Toyota Trucks) were notorious for blown head gaskets.
