Looking for a TRUE replacement head unit (not overlay) – 2016 ES300h radio boot issue
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations for a true standalone infotainment unit for my 2016 Lexus ES300h (North America, non-Mark Levinson, factory navigation, joystick controller).
My issue is the well-known Lexus OEM radio/head unit boot-loop problem (Lexus logo constantly restarting). The screen has power, all wiring/CANBUS/speakers are fine, but the OEM radio logic module never finishes booting. Because of that, anything that relies on the factory radio (AUX selection, overlays, dual-system screens, etc.) is not usable.
I’ve already confirmed with multiple AliExpress sellers that many popular “Android screen upgrades” (Nunoo / NaviRider style units) are NOT full replacements — they are overlays that:
require the original Lexus radio to be connected and working
route audio through OEM AUX
will have no sound if the OEM radio is dead
That’s exactly what I want to avoid.
What I’m looking for
A unit that:
Completely replaces the original Lexus head unit
Does NOT require the OEM radio to be connected or functional
Connects directly to the factory wiring harness
Uses CANBUS only for controls / climate display / steering wheel buttons
Outputs Apple CarPlay audio directly to the factory speakers
I do not care about AM/FM radio at all — CarPlay is all I need
What I am NOT looking for
Overlay / dual-system screens
Units that need AUX input selected on the OEM radio
Anything described as “works with original Lexus system”
Question for the community
Has anyone with an ES (2013–2018) successfully installed a true standalone Android or CarPlay head unit after an OEM radio failure like this?
If so:
Which brand/model worked?
Where did you buy it (AliExpress seller, Amazon, specialty shop, etc.)?
Any gotchas with non-ML audio or climate integration?
I’m trying to skip repairing or replacing the OEM radio entirely and just modernize the car with a proper replacement.
Thanks in advance — any real-world experience would be hugely appreciated.
my next option is replace the data board, take it to a repair service, or wait till a salvaged model with my same faceplate shows up but its seems my faceplate numbers happen to be the rarest in the world. Just my luck!
anyone have experience with replacing the data board?
I read recently on this forum that there's someone on ebay in the US who provides that service. I didn't save the link as I'm not in the US sorry.
no worries, im also not in the US, im up north in Canada and dont really want to ship my unit out since shipping plus the repair fee would end up being well over $1000.
so looking for any alternative that is remotely cheaper
Im currently looking at a data board replacement as suggested in the AndyCar youtube video and looked up the number from my data board after tearing down my radio, which led me to this.
The ports match up but something i think its missing is the sd card slot for navigation. Here is a link to the part itself. It mentions that its "Lexus car navigation" but i cant pin point the sd card slot since the data board is where the sd card plugs in from my understanding
Cross posting this here:Looks like I partially solved my infamous ES radio issue.
After a ton of digging (and refusing to pay $15k CAD at Lexus or $1.1k+ to a repair service), I started hunting for a salvage radio. Surprisingly, finding a donor ES300h was harder than expected — apparently 2016 ES owners are very responsible with their cars.
Eventually I found a 2017 Lexus ES300h radio for $470 CAD ($345 USD) with a return policy, so I decided to take the risk.
I disconnected the battery, installed the unit, powered everything back up properly — and success:
No boot loop
System loads normally
Mouse works
Climate controls, vehicle settings, and navigation all function
Different faceplate number, but same ports, same nav, same non-ML audio system
So it is possible to swap in a newer-year radio as long as:
The connectors match
Same audio system (non-Mark Levinson)
Same navigation configuration
The problem that remains: no audio
This issue existed even with the original radio:
Original unit booted once briefly
Connected phone and tested speakers
No sound from any source
With the replacement radio:
System shows tracks playing
Inputs change normally
Steering wheel / screen controls work
Volume buttons and **** do nothing
No volume bar appears on screen
No sound at all
At this point I’m starting to suspect the amplifier, not the head unit.
Looking for advice on next steps:
Pull amp and check for moisture / corrosion?
Check amp fuse(s)?
Known ES300h amp failure points?
CAN issue between head unit and amp?
Anything specific to test before sourcing a replacement amp?
Any insight from people who’ve chased this issue before would be hugely appreciated.
I think I might have the strangest luck with this car.
I finally went to pull the amp to diagnose the no-audio issue… and there is no amp. As in, the mounting location is empty and nothing is plugged in. That would definitely explain why I’ve had zero sound from day one.
So at least the problem is narrowed down now.
My question is about next steps:
Are Lexus amps model/trim specific the same way radios and faceplates are?
Do ES300h and ES350 non-Mark Levinson amps interchange? (guessing this is most likely a big no no)
Any recommendations on sourcing a used OEM amp vs going aftermarket?
If aftermarket is viable, what’s the cleanest way to integrate it with the factory head unit?
Appreciate any guidance — this one genuinely surprised me.
