Default Sport mode

Coming from a nissan 370z as my previous car, i feel powerless driving in normal mode, would it hurt my mpg's severely if i kept it in sport mode almost all the time?

Short answer, yes. It modifies how the engine responds to throttle input... in sport mode, its a more aggressive increase in throttle in relation to throttle input.

pesonal opinion here.

nope I actually get better gas mileage with sport mode

in any sense yes sport mode increases throttle bottle response which uses gas and such but it gains a constant so much faster for my style of driving (75-80mph freeway)

where as in eco mode i struggle to pedal to the metal and wasting more gas trying to get the speed i want just to have it fall down again. specially going uphill, its a pita.

The car doesn't force itself into EV mode as easily when you have the selector in sport.

I've driven a few thousand miles in sport and a few thousand in Eco, I find Eco is slightly better for MPG, but not by much at all.

Overall it's more how you the driver drives the car as opposed to what mode the car is in.

I'm definitely getting better mileage in eco mode but yes the throttle response is definitely not as fun as in sport mode. Or maybe i need to drive more in sport mode to get a good measure.

I read in one review that the writers kept the car in sport mode the entire time and no matter how much they abused it they still observed 38mpg.

Some interest explanations of why sports mode may get better mpg using the pulse and glide method.

same principle for all hybrids.
http://www.ehow.com/how_2093197_puls...ota-prius.html

detailed explanation of the technique:
http://www.metrompg.com/posts/pulse-and-glide.htm

The idea is to let the car just coast so the gas engine shuts off and you're gliding in EV mode to save gas. So hence pulse the throttle then letting it glide for awhile. It's best suited for urban driving more then hwy. Although the negative would be more stress on the starter since it's constantly going on/off.
