In the beginning, I was using different oils and filters until I settled on Mobil 1. I started using Extended Performance once I discovered it, and now use the High Mileage version of that oil once I discovered that one.

As per my post, I had lab reports showing my oil was still good to keep past 28,000 miles, but since signs of sludge starting to form at 25,000 miles between oil changes were seen in my engine, I scaled back to 20,000 OCIs (Oil Change Intervals).

The head gasket has been replaced twice after being blown in all that time.

Oil is cheap, engines aren't.
I do 80 to 90% highway driving with cruise control on 65 MPH (used to be 60 MPH for 8 years or so), so my engine wear, while low to due to speed and lack of constant acceleration, my engine is running most of the time since it would be far less in city driving when the electric motor would be operating more frequently.

Also, my engine is original.

If your Fuelly is correct, you're at 970k, so I imagine you're quiet cause you're waiting to make that 1M mile post. but wow that's crazy, you're filling up once, sometimes twice a day. i guess it makes sense. Ever consider a aux fuel tank? i don't know how that would work but i'm sure one could be rigged up.

When you do make your 1M mile post, please include a list of items replaced. i'm sure people will ask. And of course pics! So we can see how a car wears after 1M miles.

here's mine from back in the day! 2016 brand new. great experience. one of my happiest car purchases

  • I got into a wreck where I ended up having my entire passenger side scraped by a front loader that made a turn right in front of me. I wasn't able to completely avoid it.
    • I didn't use an insurance claim because I was advised by a few people that it will cost more than what my car is worth, and I don't want to total it except as a last resort. A friend who works in auto insurance recommended I find a donor car and buy the parts and have them replaced as it will cost as much as my deductible anyway. He found a donor car for me before I even started and so, a week later, I had both doors and front fender swapped from a blue 2012 CT. The color doesn't match perfectly since it was the first Ultrasonic Blue Mica on that car vs mine. The screen now will not display anything except the rearview camera.
  • A while back I replaced all 4 shocks and struts as they were wearing out. One of the new fronts was leaking and we replaced it under warranty.
  • The hybrid battery I got from Greentec Auto was replaced twice as defective post 800k miles. The 3rd one is still running well.
  • Two more studs on my wheel hub on the front wear close to snapping. Discount Tire paid for the replacements and work.
  • Got a P0101 CEL code showing an issue with the MAF. Had it cleaned and the code went away. The code eventually came back, only to disappear again and to never return. Friend and I felt that the sensor might be going bad. Turns out the labor is very high to change it so I'm holding off for now.
  • I had my first experience with a problem that caused my car to stall while driving. I was in Galveston and I got a whole bunch of warning lights. The car stopped responding to throttle inputs. I pulled over and discovered the car will no longer go into drive gear. The code read that something was wrong the the throttle body and that it was stuck open, preventing the car from safely operating.
    • I had it towed to my mechanic on Monday and we found out that some carbon deposit from the EGR system came loose and made it to the throttle body, only to get stuck there. Had it removed and cleaned the throttle body and the car started operating normally again.
  • We found some metal shavings on the oil drain plug. Decided to use a BG conditioner treatment and moved on.
  • I've so far replaced 3 of my 4 TPMS sensors this year.
  • Passenger-side high beam bulb went out.
  • At around 920k, I started to hear a humming noise coming from the front. It eventually got louder and increased with speed, and would disappear any time I turned the steering wheel to the right at any degree. Seems like another wheel bearing is wearing out.
    • Had it checked, and was told both are worn in the front! I was a little surprised because the driver's side wore out at around 620k, so I didn't think it would wear out again so soon. The interesting thing also is that the OEM was replaced it with was defective, which surprised my mechanic. We replaced both bearings, which ended up being much cheaper than aftermarket one (by $200 each!) and the labor is combined so it's cheaper to replace two instead of one at a time. The sad part is, it seems one or both is defective again just like last time. Going to the shop on Monday to take care of it under warranty.

To answer Jason, I use Mobil 1's new 20k mile high mileage/extended performance combination oil along with the 20k mile oil filter from them.

i knew it. Haaaa mobile one i used for years full syn. I have switched to royal purple full syn as it burns cleaner.

@E46CT I thought about an aux fuel tank, but figured since this is a small hybrid, there's so little space underneath the car for anything else that it would not be worth the labor involved.

I tend to be quiet on the forums due to various changes in my life and work schedules, but mostly because it was a routine to check the forums each time I got on my PC. I absolutely can't stand visiting this site on my phone. In the past few years, I've switched to only using my phone, with the PC only on special occasions. This new routine cut the forums out of my daily habit.

As far as the crash, I didn't file a claim as the deductible would have cost too much, and I didn't think it would be worth going after the other party because of legal costs. A friend who works in insurance told me that for the cost of the deductible ($2500), I could get the work done myself. He helped me by finding a donor vehicle of the same color (albeit older so it was the previous version of my color), and we bought the doors and fender from that car and had them put on mine. I will post a picture at the bottom of this post.

@Sadlex I've tried various tires but I always come back to the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus because of the fuel economy. I need to check the numbers again because even if some tires get poor fuel economy, they will make it up with lower cost of the tire and longer life. I'm trying out the Michelin Defender2. It was rated the lowest cost per mile over at Consumer Reports, but it takes a bit hit on fuel economy.

I've only had the head gasket replaced twice. Both times we did some preventative maintenance, so the water pump was replaced both times just to save time and money. Never replaced any axles or shafts. I don't think we have CV fluid on these cars... I've only ever replaced the engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolants as far as fluids.

Taken after the passenger-side repairs with donor doors and fender.

If you click on his Fuelly link, you can see that on average he logs about 340 miles per day during the work week, so I'm guessing probably 90-95k per year?
