This is true, and I'm starting to think about it. It has a luxury car ride on the freeway, surprisingly good. It's 1000 miles round trip and I am NEVER selling it. The trip would be "good" for the car if anything. If this were a car with expensive mechanical problems or just a bad egg I'd well know it by now, we've had it almost a year. Knock on wood.

However I may rent a box trailer for $29.95 and just tow it up there with the LX, that would also work.

Agreed. The SL is in its element on long highway drives.

It's a total cruise-mobile, yes. Hell I may just drive it up there. Bluetooth tape is a godsend, works flawlessly.... and the Bose that went into these cars weas excellent, and the tape players were "expensive" like on old Lexus cars so it sounds good. I know it doesn't deliver the best sound per se but it's my favorite system out of our cars...beats the LX ML just my personal preference. There's a huge acoustimass bass thing directly behind the driver's seat and the whole system gets louddddd. You never have to adjust it for speed either top down.

Issue driving it up there, will that stand break down and fit in the SL to drive back?

At the risk of sounding ignorant, can someone explain to me why the R129 SL is so special?

I’ve been an avid Mercedes fan since I was a child but that generation of SL is a little before my time. Is it a Silver Arrows thing? Just that generation of SL? I don’t understand the whole not wanting to put miles on it and not driving it thing. I’ve seen mention of it being “special” a few times in the past as well.

Respectfully, I just see an old Mercedes, it does nothing for me, but that’s me, so I’m just curious. Hoping someone can enlighten me lol

it's the last "old school" true full benz SL produced at the height of mercedes' overbuilding era and before the merger with chrysler... and it had many technical firsts and innovative design features

also princess diana drove one so that got it fairly popular lol

luckily AMGmeister has a vid on the R129 so def worth checking this out:

R129 was literally the last Mercedes Benz that was “cost-no-object” engineered vehicle from the start. Like a Land Cruiser. Built up to a standard not down to a price. Well, there’s also the way they look, to me at least. I think it’s the most beautiful Mercedes ever.

1 of 1450 Silver Arrows are enough to be special on top of a special car already IMO.

This particular member’s car is also a very nice example. I haven’t seen one that clean in more than a decade. As far as not putting miles on it, I would drive it if it were mine.

Depends on what you decide is special I guess. I'm a little skeptical these are going to be go very high in resale. They've shown increases like most expensive cars from the 90s but are still quite affordable. They barely command a premium over the common W140 S-class or older R107 SL, which indicates to me that many feel the same way you do. Cruisers aren't very en vogue which doesn't help.

you mention the cheap rental cost but not the fact that the lx and towing will cost twice the gas money as the SL.

let's see... guesses:
LX with box trailer: 12mpg, 1000mi. = 83 gallons, @ 3.50 = ~ $290 + $30 rental = $320
SL: 20mpg, 1000mi = 50gallons @ 3.50 = $175

$145 less to drive the SL and way more fun

There's a stand to hold the hardtop when it's not in use.

Forgot about that. That could be an issue.

LX is the king road trip vehicle so I think I'm just gonna tow a small box trailer for $50 and get tonnnnns of furniture blankets and also secure it down. It'll be fun!

The stand will go fine in the truck.

I might get this thing really soon, this is a really good price. I mean it's sold--we have a deal, he said take your time which is nice.

It’s just a cool car. It’s not a universally collectible car, if it were the prices would be way more than they are, but for a lot of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s these were cars we lusted after when they were new. Also if you are into Mercedes these were Bruno Sacco’s masterpiece.

Not kidding when I say I would much rather have a really nice one of these than a new SL.
