Default What to do about Ny state SLEEP act

Does anyone in have any idea what to do about the new sleep law in NY? We cannot have anything other than a stock oem/oe exhaust otherwise it will fail a yearly NY state inspection, this includes patched and welded exhausts also. It also states that any vehicle over 60 decibles is eligible for a fine up to $1000 per offense.

Leave the state. That's insane they won't just set a noise standard and actually want OE only, that to me is saying they want an excuse to purge older cars

60 decibels is probably a bit overboard, but think of all the people that are annoyed by loud exhausts. It's a huge problem in San Jose where I live with people driving through the neighborhood at 3am with fart cans, performance exhausts, straight pipes, exhaust and CAT deletes. My neighbors boyfriend would wake us up everytime he came and left, it's fricken annoying when you get woken up in the middle of the night and you have to get up early for work the next morning. He got a ticket and had to put his OEM back on.

These are not just ordinances that cities and states come up with because they feel like it and are trying to take rights away. They usually happen due to complaints from citizens and voters. The city of San Jose just implemented the sound ordinance last year due to residents of the city demanding it. This is a Democracy, right? So vote. But you will probably lose this one because there are more voters who want noise ordinances enforced then don't

That’s a crazy law! I would move out of the state if that happened here, as extreme as that sounds.

To me I see this issue this way...your not looking to infringe on anybody else's ears at 3am or your just a person who doesn't give a S*** about anybody but themselves because being an a-hole is your right. Loud exhausts have been around since I was kid. Cities, counties and states only began to recently crack down on them because people are driving through neighborhoods late at night disturbing normal people. Nobody really cares in the day time, although I want to laugh when I see someone with a fart can hanging off their car I just SMH. Anyway, that's all I have to say on the issue

Then set it as a output noise limit, tires going down the road at 50mpg make more noise than 60db. They should not care AT ALL what the parts used to get the end result of 60db is, if they want quiet then make it about being actually quiet

On the same line of thought don't be an *** with a loud exhaust or have a valve like modern cars.

I get what you are saying, but people drive through all the time late at night with normal exhausts, and we don't hear their tires. One neighbor's kid down the street has a 350z, he put some type of custom exhaust plus possibly CAT and Resonator delete and you can hear him when he comes and goes...and he lives more than a block away. He comes shooting down his street late at night and early mornings and wakes us up...and our house is insulated! That's what brought about the sound laws, not some urge to crack down on people's liberties

Then have a set limit at a noise target at a given distance and to hell with how it's accomplished. I usually hear tires if a car is stock exhaust, your example of aftermarket is kinda odd? I would expect the two to flip with any sort of mod

I think this was also fast tracked because of the cars with gunshot exhausts.
Yes, we have always had loud exhausts, but now there are always reports on the local Citizen app about gunshots that are usually these cars.
It's aggravating to have these people step on the gas, let it go, step on the gas, let it go, in order to make their exhaust pop.
The usual suspects are mostly BMW and Infinitis.

That sounds complicated. Aftermarket just means it's not OEM. If I install an Nvidia exhaust on my IS350, that's an example of Aftermarket. Not all aftermarket exhausts are loud, I was just using that as a general term, meaning not the original factory installed exhaust. Nothing to do with sound, quality etc

This Law is asinine!

Why don’t they have these type of fines for assault or property damage?

Its just a revenue generating tool for the state and further tax on general public.

Unfortunately NY doesn’t care about if people leave as long as Wall Street revenue keeps the high net worth population here. The exodus is HUGE and mostly from Upstate NY like Buffalo, Syracuse etc. A lot of my friends and coworkers have relocated to FL due to combination of Taxes, quality of life, crime, weather and politics.

The new law holds the shops responsible for installation of any non-OEM exhaust no matter the sound.
They will be fined.

Another way to put it is childish behavior that is purposefully initiated to get attention and a reaction. Well if it were my son...I'd beat him like a red headed step child. I don't care if he's 18 and almost a foot taller than me
