Tesla Model S Plaid
i suspect sales of S and X are TINY, but to use your phrase, tesla doesn't care because they are selling every 3/Y they can make and are frantically trying to expand production with TX and Berlin. great problem to have but they know they're currently missing out on tons of revenue. i just wonder though if all this 3/Y revenue growth will hurt tesla at some point because there is a limit to the appeal of those two models. huge limit to be sure, but while they continue cranking out those, more and more other new competitive vehicles are coming on the market. still, those other new models seem to be very production limited too, but tesla's market share will likely decline as their sales continue to go up. not a bad problem, for sure, but even with huge volume they need to make sure they don't become too pigeon-holed.
there's far fewer customers willing to shell out for vehicles like the S and X, and the Cybertruck seems still to be a looong way off.
meanwhile the plaid is a technical marvel with some controversial features... 2 hallmarks of tesla.

that's far too sweeping a statement. i think you mean that those people who end up buying a model S and X are willing to live with quality issues (most of which seem to get fixed by Tesla eventually). but for many OTHER people, they simply won't put up with having to go through that and don't buy in the first place.
And I wasn't talking about quality issues that can be fixed, I was talking about material choices. No real leather, etc.
The short answer is a Tesla is not for you, the same as a Ford or Chevy is not for me. One reason I leased a Polestar over a Tesla is I liked the fact that the Polestar has excellent fit and finish, better ride and has a more normal interior. I sacrificed the longer range and better drivetrain from the Model 3 because I wanted comfort and normalcy over the additional range and better drivetrain efficiency offered by Tesla. Their simplistic cabin styling and layout was just not for me
As for the Model 3, you can't compare that to the refreshed S since the Model 3 has been out for a long time now. As EZZ has always said, if you care about fit and finish and even reliability, don't get a first year Tesla because the issues are real. It just is what it is and buyers feel the positives outweigh the negatives.
the early days S and X definitely had more problems. but the past couple years i definitely think the cars got better. not perfect, but better
This...a Tesla is not for you if you are looking for Tier 1, 2 or even tier 3 fit and finish. I just happened to look at my trunk yesterday and the left side was way off and something I never noticed before. I fixed it myself by increasing the rubber "stopper" on the left side significantly higher than the right side which was adjusted all the way down to get it even close. Kind of ridiculous given how much the car costs but the car is really a joy to drive and as a result, you have to overlook the fit and finish.

My Lexus IS350 was the only car that I had without rattles. My BMW friends all have rattles. My Infiniti rattled. My Hondas and Toyotas all rattled. My Tesla is no worse than my Infiniti or my Toyota and Hondas and Mazdas (probably slightly better on overall road noise).
Same here, my 12 year old IS350 has no rattles to this day. My 16 year old 2006 Camry has very few rattles that are the result of age and mileage, but my 2013 Toyota Sienna is rattle central. It's the first Toyota I bought that was built in America. Go figure
Fingers crossed. I currently have 2 BMW's both 2019's with no rattles. And that's after driving around on our sometimes crummy roads.
Plaid is a beast it makes more power than Tesla claims. Lucid I bet does as well.
