October 1, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC sold 507,351 vehicles in the third quarter – a 10 percent decrease over the same time period a year earlier – as strong retail sales offset much of the ongoing softness in fleet purchases.
The Ram brand remained a powerhouse for dealers as retail sales for the iconic pickup trucks rose 15 percent. Jeep® also posted a solid quarter, led in large part by the continued success of the Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Wrangler. Total Gladiator sales rose 37 percent to 22,163 vehicles.
Third-quarter total sales finished 38 percent higher than the second-quarter results as FCA sold 140,265 more vehicles.
“The results reflect the hard work our dealers have done throughout the third quarter as they worked through the COVID-19 restrictions while still improving our sales over the prior months," U.S. Head of Sales Jeff Kommor said. “Jeep and Ram are hot and we continue to prioritize deliveries to our dealers who are asking us to ship as many vehicles as we can build.”
During the quarter, FCA provided an overview of the depth of its Ram and Jeep product pipelines with the worldwide reveals of the Ram TRX, Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept and Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid.
These vehicles are already stirring consumer buzz and excitement. Production of the TRX is scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter, while the Grand Wagoneer Concept marks the first step in the rebirth of Wagoneer as Jeep works to quickly expand into new segments and more premium spaces.
FCA also unveiled the Wrangler 4xe, which boasts 375 horsepower and delivers up to 25 miles of pure electric operation for daily commutes, while providing nearly silent, open-air freedom without range anxiety. The Wrangler 4xe will be available by the end of the year.
“We are optimistic about the U.S. market and expect sales to remain strong as we close out 2020,” Kommor said.

Hyundai Motor America Reports September and Q3 2020 Sales
- Total September Sales Were Up 5%; Retail September Sales Increased 21%
- Q3 Retail Sales Grew 7%
- Hyundai Retail Sales Outperformed the Industry Every Month of 2020
“Our outstanding product portfolio combined with stable inventory, the right incentives and the elevation of the customer experience at our dealerships has resulted in another month of market share gains,” said Randy Parker, vice president, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “Retail sales in the third quarter also increased, another indication that sales are recovering from the pandemic.”
Hyundai sold 51,784 retail units in September, with SUVs representing 67% of the total retail mix. Hyundai SUV retail sales grew 36%. Retail sales jumped across the Hyundai lineup with Sonata (+25%), Santa Fe (+17%), Tucson (+5%), Kona (+44%) and Palisade (+125%) all achieving year-over-year gains.
In the third quarter, Hyundai sold a total of 170,828 units, a 1% decline and 161,254 retail units, a 7% increase compared with Q3 2019.

September Product and Corporate Activities
- All-New Tucson: Hyundai unveiled to the world the all-new, fourth-generation Tucson that will be available in the U.S. in the spring of 2021.
- 2021 Sonata N-Line: Hyundai revealed the racy design of the all-new 2021 Sonata N-Line.
- RM20e: At the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2020, Hyundai introduced the next-generation electrified RM20e Racing Midship Sports Car prototype.
- COVID-19 Support: The 23COVID-19 testing centers supported by Hyundai Hope On Wheels surpassed one million tests and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama donated 6,000 face masks to Selma City Schools.
- Marketing Initiatives: Hyundai is ramping up its U.S. marketing activities for the fourth quarter with its sponsorship of NBC’s Sunday Night Football, a new owner safety story, a drive-thru art experience in Los Angeles for Hispanic Heritage month and a content partnership with WWE. National advertising for the all-new 2021 Elantra also begins today.
- Hyundai and UNDP Collaboration: Hyundai Motor Company and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) entered into an inaugural agreement aimed at spreading messages of sustainability to people around the world.
With the economy starting to open up again after the long shutdowns, and the effect of End-of-Year 2020 sales-incentives from the manufacturers, I'd be surprised if non-fleet-sales just about everywhere weren't up substantially in September.
Also not surprising, though, that fleet sales are down, due to some rental-vehicle companies either in serious trouble or actually going out of business.

GM Q3 Retail Share Climbs Despite Tight Inventory
2020-10-01
?Subject=GM Q3 Retail Share Climbs D...1-gmsales.html - Strengthening retail sales driving industry recovery
- All-new crossover and SUV deliveries continue to gain sales momentum
- Large pickups showing strength with heavy-duty year-over-year growth
“Our dealers are doing exceptionally well utilizing a combination of customer-facing online technologies – such as Shop. Click. Drive. – and showroom sales to deliver vehicles safely to our customers. This is contributing to retail share gains while we continue to refill the pipeline,” said Kurt McNeil, GM vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “Industry-wide, dealers are selling a high mix of large pickups as the summer comes to an end. Our strong large pickup and all-new full-size SUV lineups from Chevrolet and GMC are selling extremely fast.”
GM SUVs, Trucks and Luxury Segments Drive Quarterly Sales Results
GM’s mid-size SUVs outperformed the industry, including the Chevrolet Blazer up 45 percent – its best quarter ever – and the Cadillac XT6, also up 45 percent compared to the third quarter of last year. Buick’s compact SUV, the Envision, was up 44 percent. In addition to Cadillac having a full lineup of crossovers available, the CT4 and CT5 sedans continue to grow share in crowded segments, with CT4’s average transaction price outperforming its segment average, according to J.D. Power.
The company’s all-new crossovers – the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX – continue to gain momentum. Compared to the second quarter of this year, Trailblazer sales increased 54 percent and Encore GX sales increased 73 percent. The two vehicles captured a combined 11 percent of retail market share in the third quarter for the small SUV segment, according to J.D. Power.
Despite tight inventory, GM’s large pickup trucks sold well, especially heavy-duty pickups; the Chevrolet Silverado HD was up 9 percent and GMC Sierra HD was up 11 percent compared to a year ago. Total Sierra sales posted its best third quarter ever. Year to date, GM’s combined light- and heavy-duty pickups gained 1.6percentage points in retail market share to capture 37.5 percent of the segment, according to J.D. Power.
GM remains focused on producing the right mix of vehicles to meet demand. Large pickup and full-size SUV plants are all operating on three shifts and at maximum overtime. Robust, multi-layered COVID-19 safety protocols have been implemented across all of GM’s facilities to help keep employees safe and restore production to pre-pandemic levels.
Third-Quarter Economic and Industry Update
“While the economy has made a substantial rebound in the third quarter, retail auto sales have been even more resilient,” said GM Chief Economist Elaine Buckberg. “Super low auto loan interest rates have boosted retail auto sales; yet more strength comes from pandemic-induced demand.”
Pandemic-induced auto demand drivers include:
- Consumers see private vehicles as a safe space for both local and long-distance trips, as indicated by surveys from McKinsey & Company and Ipsos;
- Some households that are confident in their finances are likely using savings from foregone vacations, entertainment and restaurant meals toward a new vehicle;
- City residents have increased interest in owning a vehicle as some seek to move to the suburbs and others want to escape the city on weekends;
- The sharp rebound in housing permits is a positive signal for overall auto demand; and
- Higher home construction activity and strong demand for boats and RVs are particularly favorable for heavy-duty pickups.
GM Financial Driving Enhanced Customer Experience, Loyalty and Sales as it Celebrates 10 Years as GM’s Captive Finance Arm
GM’s growing captive finance company has become an integral and strategic business unit since it was acquired in 2010 and renamed GM Financial, supporting both customers and dealers across economic cycles. GM Financial generated nearly 2 million leads over the last 12 months, helping drive more than 400,000 vehicle sales, 73 percent of which were financed by GM Financial.
- GM Financial’s penetration of total U.S. GM retail sales was 53 percent in the second quarter, driven by strong dealer engagement with the captive finance company.
- Volume for GM Financial’s online credit application was up 27 percent year-over-year (first half of 2020 compared to the same period last year), with more customers shopping online in response to COVID-19.
- For the fourth consecutive year, GM Financial was ranked first in finance captive loyalty, with loyalty rates among current lease and loan customers at 78 percent and 68 percent, respectively, based on CY 2019 IHS Markit Return to Market Manufacturer Loyalty data.

When I was picking up my GS a couple weeks ago my salesman said that they have been slammed lately. Not sure what kind of supply issues they may be having, but I've never seen their lot empty like that. They usually have a good 75 or more RXs and at least 30 ESs, then a handful of each of everything else. They probably had no more than 10 RXs left (no RX450h in stock) and just 5 or so ESs. They had one LS, no LCs or LXs, 1 GS (well two, but I bought one), and maybe 2 GXs. I only saw one UX.
