If the people contact me (left a note & took pics) and want compensation I would like to pay out of pocket and not insurance if possible as I have a perfect record and would like to keep it that way. The damage was two scuffs to the front bumper and seems pretty minor but I have never been in any accidents and don't have much experience with this sort of thing. Can this simply be touched up or will the car need a whole new front bumper (it seems sometimes body shops will say this even though it is not necessary)? I'm willing to pay but I don't want to pay for more than I reasonably have to. If people with experience with this could give me some advice I would be very appreciative! The car is an Acura TSX 2011 or similar (I think).
I will post pics below.
The images provided appear to be fairly minor.

I've been in a similar situation and this is what I learned:
  1. If you come to an agreement outside of insurance, ensure you are signing an agreement with the terms clearly outlined
    1. 'I will do abc by xyz date at xyz repair shop' - simple language helps mitigate any misunderstanding
  2. Request payment arrangements to pay the body shop directly, this will help validate your agreement
  3. Consider providing Ride share service or rental car service while their vehicle is being repaired
Overall, make every attempt to meet reasonable requests and be understanding if they are upset.

Hope this helps!

To repair it right, you're looking at $800-$1,200.

If I was the driver of the other car, I'd go get a body shop estimate, and present it to you, and say "This is how much it costs". If the other driver started giving me a hassle "Hey can't you paint it, instead of replace the bumper?", then I'd be done with him/her, and file a police report and call my insurance co. If the body shop tells me I need to do it, then I'm not haggling with the body shop to accommodate the other driver. I would not be willing to negotiate it--he/she hit my car, and inconvenienced me, and they need to make me whole.

Other people may see it differently.

One minor incident will not affect your rates if you have a reputable ins co.

Honestly? I don't know that I would even allow the other drivers insurance to not be involved. Too much potential for problems.

One claim like this isn't going to kill you. Use your insurance.

OP, I agree with the opinions about contacting your insurance company/broker/agent and looking at your policy vs just offering to negotiate with the other party. You will need to look at things like:

What is your insurance deductible? If the other driver goes to an expensive shop and they quote him $2000 - he might just go with that. It's an Acura.

If he's willing to live with it and pocket your money and not fix the damage, then you might be ok.

How hard did you back into the Acura? Do you think it might have been bad enough to damage the transmission's locking pin if the car is an auto? There could be mechanical damage.

Do you have a accident clause where your rates don't go up on an at fault?

No matter how minor the damage is OP is at fault. If the other guy is crooked mind type it'll be difficult to deal with. Worst case is bumper replacement , or little touch up blending paint if there is no dent. OP is in no position to tell what to do to the other party. There are many suckers out there. One time my neighbor(a very rich guy) bumped into a parked unoccupied SUV pulling out from parking lot of a shopping plaza. He left
a note and left. Later the owner (a couple) called him and claimed they are hurt having neck pains, etc. trying to get some quick bucks. He then called the cops for cheating with several witnesses who knew the SUV was unoccupied at the time. Police took over from there.

Assuming that is what you meant by the comment, how is the OP a sucker? He (or she) simply had an unfortunate incident (we probably all have, at some point)...and is simply asking us for advice. I see nothing wrong with that.

When I say sucker I meant the other party, not the OP. Wanna hear another story?

one day I got a phone call from a cop working at the North end of the town district to bring my car as soon as possible and told me not to wash it(2008 Acura MDX) So I hurried up there met the cop. He told me someone made a report for "hit and run".Description of car was mine. He wanted to examine my car for scraches or runbbed on paint or any damage.
None was found. After few days I got a letter from insurance co. informing me they are raising premium based on police report, little more than 100.00. I kept wondering since I live in the South end of the town why a guy living in the other end has anything to do in the middle of the day down in the South. Stated damage was broken tail light assembly. About a month passed when I got another letter from insurance co. informing me they credit my account they charged earlier, told me police charged a guy scamming people with such false report. Like this scammers are out there. This guy scammed quite a few B4 police nailed him.

Interesting story. At least you were dealing with an honest insurance company that recognized the error and refunded you.

I'm generally a nice and forgiving guy, but I don't have much paitience with those who deliberately scam others.....especially those who don't have much in the way of funds to deal with it. Lock his a** up.

i know you asked for advice, but I want to commend you for leaving a note and taking responsibility for your mistake. When my car was hit while parked last year, the person did not leave a note. Sadly, I think most people wouldn’t.

Can you imagine in the big picture, how insignificant those scratches are? And we're now talking about $1,200, neck injuries, and the sky is falling! And we're so quick to assume the other party is going to take the OP to the cleaners. You never know, maybe the driver was rendered lame, lore, and will assemble a claim for $2 mil. (this happened to me)?

My dad gave me some good advice as I was 19 at the time. 1) Man up 2) If you did something wrong, you will have to pay the consequences, if you did not, you have nothing to worry about 3) you don't have 2 mil.

The best thing to do is live your life right. Don't worry about others being not reasonable or assume they're out to get you. It could happen, but what's the alternative, to not drive? To not go out the front door? If the other party wants to make a bogus $1200 claim, that's up to them. They hand me a piece of paper that says $1,200? I tell them good for you, call my insurance, I told you I would pay a reasonable amount, but you want to do that, let's go through insurance then.

btw some scary dudes approached me in a parking lot following me, which I found odd. They go hey we noticed some scratches on your bumper (LS430), you want them fixed? That's what we do, we can give you an estimate. My car was purchased 11 y.o. and one of the previous owners scraped the bumper. My scratches have to be 5X what the OP did to that Acura, it's not a big deal....my .02

Exactly, the OP did what people used to do, and it's commmedable. Today? People put these atrocious looking bumper badger things on their bumpers for protection. You ever watch a car go in and out of a space in NYC, sometimes it's not just a love tap. I have a friend who used to push cars forward so he could fit. I told him that doesn't make any sense because now the meter (meters back then) is not in front of that car, it's next to the driver door.

Wow some really great feedback here. Thank you all who have complimented my good nature as it further makes me believe I did the right thing. I admittedly almost did not leave a note for the very reasons described here by other members. The thought of my honesty and desire to do the right thing being taken advantage of by some evil person (which clearly does happen!) made me sick to my stomach.
However what’s done is done and I can only hope for the best. I’m sure that the damage I did can be repaired rather than just replacing the whole bumper however I realize that your average non car person probably will not want the hassle and will just take it in and do whatever the body shop says. If the repair is closer to 800$ I will try to pay out of pocket and will definitely make some kind of written agreement but if it is more like 1200$ I will just have my insurance cover it. I’m sure my rates will go up as I am under 25 yo even though it’s just one minor accident however I will call them and find out. Good to know it will not be on my driving record though.

You did the right thing, and should continue to do the right thing.
