Thought this was a fun read. The 1994 Supra owner here is, I believe, a member in our LFA forum.

2020 Toyota Supra vs. 1994 Toyota Supra Turbo: Reflections on a Japanese Performance Icon

The latest Supra is really good, but is it better than its legendary predecessor?
Car and Driver article HERE.

That's because they were too busy including anything BMW or Honda no matter how good or bad the cars may have been.

yes, it is. Mk4 supra has a legendary status, but it is not a legendary driving car. People simply glorified it beyond what it actually was.
mk5 is a better driving car. Is mk5 a better supra, though? I don't know how to answer that.

Well, we know it's a better BMW for sure. It's the only bmw that made C&D top 10.

The article misses the whole point of the Mk4. What made the Mk4 special was how much housepower you can easily crank out of the 2jz engine and not have it explode. It was a car made for modding, and had so much more potential beyond stock.

Tons of cars are better than the Mk4 supra in stock configuration.

Yes having a stout engine and transmission that could hold together under high horsepower is what made it legendary; however it was a beast in stock form, in terms of speed, handling and braking, at the time compared to its competitors which included the 911 Turbo, Viper, Corvette, Ferrari, among others. The new Supra is not in that tier anymore in terms of performance.

Also, of course a 20 year newer car is better than the old one. If it wasn’t that would be a bigger problem.

But it was also WAY more expensive for its day than the MKV is. Starting MSRP on the Supra Turbo was $50,400 in 1995. In 2020, it's $49,990. So cheaper in absolute dollars, but when you throw 25 years of inflation into the calculus, you wind up with the MKIV costing over $88k in today's dollars. 75% more expensive than the current model.

By comparison, the Viper of that era was only about 30% more expensive than the Supra, at $66k. The last Viper (which was discontinued in 2017) went for $130k, nearly triple what the MKV costs.

Esquire named it their car of the year. Interesting choice, but curious when the C8 also dropped... I wonder what other cars were in the running. Not saying the Supra isn't cool — I've driven it, and it is. But I have to wonder if some of the looks they got in LA were that they got a pre-production model?

Quick ownership update in month 4:

- miles : ~1400 miles (weekends primarily)
- mods : downpipe, tune, wheels/tires (315/35s)
- HP : ~500whp (est)
- best time : 11.5 @126mph (street, traction limited)
- smiles : nonstop
- regrets : not being able to drive it more

Good : mods galore for power, looks, etc.
Bad : internet trolls that have no clue
Ugly : Traction woes even on 315 tires

Zupra is everything that I had expected and more : unquestionable modability in power and looks. Power is very easy to get in the platform, which on my own Zupra is now as fast as my previous 515whp Q60 (though not as quick yet). The looks and stares you get makes you think you own an exotic or something, or as my friend likes to say, it attracts more d@#$ than most chicks. As far as issues, none to report though the German ergonomics is sometimes annoying (4 buttons to turn headlights on and off?!!!). I'll be putting in my new turbo soon (this is a Supra after all), so should be eclipsing 600+ who by early next year.

Cool update. We sat in one recently at Toyota, what a well built rock-solid interior. Hard to get in and out, but that kind of is the point of a sports car.

Awesome news - I love seeing the red on big fat radials out back. Glad to hear you're enjoying the car!
