"This should come as no surprise," said Michelle Krebs, an analyst with Autotrader. "This is the first volume vehicle they've ever produced. Making cars is not an easy business, and they're finding that out."
But the Model 3 is not the first time it has fallen well behind promised production targets. Tesla's high-priced crossover, the Model X, went into production in late 2015, long after originally promised and had a slower-than-expected roll out. Production of the Model S sedan, its best selling vehicle to date, was also much slower than originally promised.
Krebs said Tesla missing deadlines is "part of their track record."
Tesla has said this before also but yet it repeats for each new model...
But Tesla said those problems are now well behind it, and the company said it had record production of both those luxury models in the third quarter -- building just over 25,000 of the two models in that quarter. It expects to deliver about 100,000 of those models in 2017.
Here is another good article that seeks to translate TSLA's marketing speak to sales, delivery and capacity analysis. Disclosure: I do not own any TSLA shares.
Looks like there is some sort of issue with a supplier bottleneck at Tesla's Taiwan supplier.
Luxury electric carmaker Tesla plans to slash by 40% its orders for parts for the new Model 3 mass-market sedan from Taiwanese auto component maker Hota Industrial Mfg. from December, according to a media report.Shares of the parts maker dropped nearly 9% after the Economic Daily News reported, citing Hota Chairman Shen Kuo-jung, that Tesla had told the firm orders would be cut to 3,000 sets per week from 5,000 sets starting December, due to a “bottleneck” in the production of Model 3.Tesla may delay scheduled weekly shipments of 10,000 parts in March by a few weeks until May or June, the report added.Hota, which makes gears and axles for vehicles, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Earlier this month, Tesla said production bottlenecks had left the company behind its planned ramp-up for the new Model 3 sedan. It began production of the model in July.
Clarification... It is not a bottleneck at the Taiwan supplier Hota; it is some other bottleneck at Tesla which is slowing down production of the Model 3. As a result, Tesla does not need as many supplies from Hota as originally planned, so Tesla requested that Hota slow down delivery of components from Hota to Tesla.
I had read elsewhere that one major reason for the slow ramp-up of production of the Model 3 is because Tesla insists on building too many complex components (including seats) itself rather than subcontracting out production to specialty suppliers.
Correct Sulu. Thanks. Tesla would be better off outsourcing a lot of things just to get production ramped up, but it looks like Musk really wants to control it all with Tesla.
finally saw one on the road today. it's an ugly car, IMO. looks like smushed model S and model X
Tesla just opened a delivery/service center near my office in Playa Vista and I've seen quite a few around. They are hideous! I agree they look like a squished Model S and X combined. My good friend had put a deposit down on one last year, but I talked him out of it based off of it being a first generation model. I've been waiting for him to see one so I can hear his opinion. I took this picture last week of the rear of one. The rear is the least ugly part of the car. Looks horrible from the front and side.

We were talking about the model 3 today at work and I had not seen the interior of it until today (I'm not really interested in the car as you can tell, lol). It is absolutely, hideously, horrendous!!! The model S is fine but this thing looks like a cheap 80s future movie car with a TV in the middle of the console and now I see this so I looked up some real world pictures of it and I agree with ya, this thing is just ugly... don't care how affordable it is... not even that cheap anyways.... could have made it look so much better inside and outside
