January Auto Sales; Not Bad, For January.
January auto sales are predicted to be just over 1 million cars and trucks, getting 2014 off to a decent start, according to forecasters.
“We believe that replacement demand, attractive products and strong consumer credit will continue to support sales as we return to the normal selling rate of 16 million units,” said Mike Jackson, chairman and CEO of AutoNation Inc., in a conference call on Thursday, Jan. 30.
For the year, that would be a modest increase in the range of 3 to 5 percent from 2013, according to AutoNation. Based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., AutoNation is the country’s largest auto retail group.
Automakers are expected to report January sales on Monday, Feb. 3.
For the industry, U.S. auto sales in 2013 were 15.6 million, according to AutoData Corp., Woodcliff Lake, N.J. That was an increase of about 8 percent from 2012. Therefore, forecasts for 2014 imply slower growth.
It’s hard to draw too many conclusions from January sales alone. January and February are usually the most anemic months for car sales.

That’s because of the weather, obviously, and also because it’s a long way from the traditional model-year changeover in the late summer and early fall. During the model-year changeover, the car companies offer the best deals of the year on the old models to clear them out of inventory, and consumers are more interested in the new ones.
A lot of educated guesswork goes into forecasting sales for the whole year based on just one month’s worth of sales.
The often-quoted SAAR – short for Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate – is exactly that, an estimate for the full year based on one month’s worth of sales. Because auto sales vary so much seasonally, you can’t take any one month and multiply by 12 to predict a year’s worth of sales.
For instance forecasters for Edmunds.com estimate January sales at just over 1 million. Their January estimate times 12 would be around 12.4 million for all of 2014. Yet Edmunds.com estimates the January SAAR at 15.6 million.
That’s another way of saying January sales were pretty good – for January, which is usually a lousy month.

Gm
General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) dealers delivered 171,486 vehicles in the United States in January 2014. Retail sales were down 10 percent year over year, although retail deliveries of passenger cars were up slightly. Fleet deliveries declined 18 percent, due to a planned reduction in rental vehicle sales. Total sales were down 12 percent.
“We are building long-term value for our customers and it starts with award-winning new products,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “We have major launches underway and we are going to accelerate brand-building and other growth initiatives, which include executing our winning strategy to sell more pickup trucks with larger cabs, more features and advanced technology.”
Half of GM’s light-duty pickup sales in the 4th quarter of 2013 were premium-contented models that transacted at prices of $40,000 or more. That compares with about 1/3 of sales in the 2013 calendar year and 20 percent in 2012. The mix continued to improve in January.
Key enablers, depending on the model, include superior fuel economy, quieter cabins, higher towing and payload ratings, and better resale value. For example, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 earned a “Best Resale Value” award from Kelley Blue Book as 1 of the Top 10 models in the industry.
Image-building initiatives include prominent advertising during the Super Bowl, the Winter Olympics and the NCAA March Madness/Final 4 basketball tournament. In addition, the Chevrolet Silverado “Hand’s-On” Truck tour will visit more than 100 locations this year, with 21 events scheduled for the 1st quarter.

Historically, January is the industry’s lowest sales month of the year. Extreme winter weather in the South, Midwest and Northeast this January further depressed GM and industry sales. The seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) for light vehicles is expected to be an estimated 15.3 million units, down from 15.6 million in December.
GM expects light vehicle sales for the year to be in a range of 16 million to 16.5 million units, which would be the industry’s best year since 2007, when 16.2 million vehicles were sold. GM expects to earn modestly higher market share in this environment.
GM also expects to grow its commercial fleet business in 2014 thanks to the ongoing launches of the all-new Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups, and the fall launches of the Chevrolet City Express small van, and the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups. GM expects flat deliveries to rental companies compared with 2013.

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 3, 2014 – Ford Motor Company January sales of 154,644 total vehicles are down 7 percent from a year ago, while retail sales of 113,721 vehicles are off 5 percent. Ford Mustang and Lincoln brand vehicles posted gains in the 1st month of 2014.
“Given the difficult weather in our largest sales regions, we are fortunate to have held in at retail as well as we did,” said John Felice, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service. “In areas where the weather was good, such as in the West, sales were up. The poor weather also had an impact on the timing of some of our fleet deliveries. A bright spot is Lincoln, which had its strongest sales in 4 years.”
Sales of Mustang totaled 3,881 vehicles in January. This represents an 8 percent increase over last year and Mustang’s best beginning-of-year performance since 2010.
Lincoln sales are up 43 percent, with 5,973 vehicles sold in January. This represents Lincoln’s best performance for the month in 4 years. The increase came from Lincoln MKZ, with sales of 2,122 vehicles, up 368 percent, and Lincoln MKX, with 2,479 vehicles sold, a 36 percent year-over-year gain.
Ford Motor Company fleet sales were off 14 percent in January, as winter weather hampered the ability to fill a portion of fleet orders.

when companies brag about year over year sales gains it's pretty meaningless as the population grows each year too.. but it's better the shrinking sales!

Subaru Sets January Sales Record

Subaru of America, Inc. has announced record January sales as it looks to continue its strong sales performance into 2014. The company, which has set sales records for the past 5 consecutive years, announced its best ever January sales of 33,000 vehicles, a 19% increase over January 2013.
Increased availability of the strong selling Forester and Crosstrek models helped sales as both models continued their strong performances. Subaru expects this sales momentum to continue throughout the year, with the recently announced all-new 2015 Legacy mid-size sedan set to debut at the Chicago auto show this month and more new models due to launch later in 2014.
Thomas J. Doll, president and COO of Subaru of America said; “It's great to start the year off in such positive fashion. Attending the National Automotive Dealer Association meeting last month, we could see that our retailers are in a buoyant and positive mood. We have a lot to look forward to in 2014.”
William H. Cyphers, senior vice president of sales said; "Our crossover models are the mainstay of our growth but we expect our sedan models to follow that trend in 2014 with the launch of the all-new Legacy which will take that model into new territory."

Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 23,494 units delivered in January.
“With our planned wind down of models in run-out, our January sales results were expectedly impacted,” said Mark Barnes, Vice President, Sales, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Nonetheless, we’re optimistic we will see a steady pace in the months ahead as our Super Bowl advertisement, “Wings,” continues to raise awareness of the reliability and durability of our products, and we prepare to launch the next generation Golf family of vehicles."
Volkswagen’s 60-second Game Day advertisement “Wings” featured iconic German engineers and centers around the VW’s 100,000 mile claim – that the brand has the most vehicles on the road with over 100,000 miles*.
Last week, Volkswagen teased its 2014 Game Day spot with “Algorithm.” The series of teasers gave viewers a glimpse of what the Big Game spot might have looked like if Volkswagen had handed the creative reins over to the brand’s quirky and enthusiastic German engineers. The teaser pokes fun at Volkswagen’s perfectionist culture while “Wings” celebrates our engineers’ devotion to the design of our vehicles.

Hyundai
Hyundai Motor America today reported its best January in company history, selling 44,005 units for the month, up less than 1 percent versus the same period last year.
“While year-over-year sales were up slightly, January was a bit of a challenge due to weather issues across the country, making us wonder how many more units we could have sold,” said Bob Pradzinski, vice president, national sales. “Even with our Alabama plant shutting down production of Elantra and Sonata for a couple of days, due to a winter snow storm that crippled Montgomery, our dealers are well stocked with a full lineup of vehicles ready to support customer demand.”
Leading the way were Accent, Elantra and Santa Fe with sales up 21, 26 and 12 percent, respectively. Equus experienced sales of 327 units for the month, up 29 percent.
