2015 Nissan Z May Be Lighter, Leaner
http://www.insideline.com/nissan/201...er-leaner.html
Just the Facts:
-The 2015 Nissan Z will be lighter, leaner and appeal to a more mainstream audience, Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura told Inside Line in a recent interview.
-Work on the new Z is "at an early stage," he said, with a concept version of the car in the works.
-Unveiling of the new Z concept could come as early as the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

The 2015 Nissan Z will be lighter, leaner and appeal to a more mainstream audience, Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura told Inside Line in a recent interview.

Work on the new Z is "at an early stage," he said, with a concept version of the car in the works.

Unveiling of the new Z concept could come as early as the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Presumably, a lighter Nissan Z would return better gas mileage than the current version. The 2013 Nissan 370Z returns 19 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 370Z coupe has a curb weight of 3,314 pounds.

The current 370Z has not enjoyed quite the same success as the 2002 350Z, which revived the Z car reputation and sold well in the U.S., Japan and Europe. "The next one has to have a stronger impact," says Nakamura.

And that won't be achieved by making it bigger. "It cannot be any larger," he says. '"It's at its maximum size now and should go leaner." By that he means lighter too, with the new model to feature a down-sized engine, probably a four-cylinder turbo rather than today's 3.7-liter V6. "It needs to be lighter, and more accessible to open the door to more people," he adds.

Wonder will it get its own platform to get lighter? They have done a great job with the car since it came back!

Ok by me. The 350 and 370 have done the Z name proud but I hope for the next car to be even closer to the original Z cars in spirit.

The interior could use some improvement , both 350 and 370 looks cheap , always s major turnoff for me ... The 90-95 300ZX still my all time fav. Z

The 370z is a huge improvement over the 350, especially the interior. However, 370 sales have been a huge disappointment.

I don't believe they'd launch the next-gen Z without their flagship VQ37VHR engine in it. I'm guessing a base model "250Z" maybe with Mercedes 1.8L turbo engine which provides pretty good performance and would be a mileage winner too, and then a 370Z top model. It would be similar to the BMW Z4 which offers both 4 and 6-cylinder engines.

My hope is to bring back the original 240Z style/flair with a 2.4L Turbo to battle with the likes of the FRS/BRZ, Genesis Coupes, and Mustangs. Trim back about 400-500lbs with 240hp and you got a winner!

kudos to the engineers at Nissan who seem like they will be able to make the next Z smaller and lighter. In todays automotive world its almost unheard of
