A car is made up of thousands of moving and other parts that are important in driving the car down the road. They are all wear-and-tear items. Each item wears down at a different rate so has to be serviced at a different rate.

Some items have to be checked, serviced and/or replaced every 8000 km / 5000 miles while other items do not wear as quickly so only need service at less frequent intervals -- 24k km / 15k miles, 48k km / 30k miles, 96k km / 60k miles, 144k km / 90k miles.

It is better to have these items checked, serviced and maintained than to run the risk of (catastrophic) failure in the middle of a commute or long road trip. Isn't it better knowing that your engine, tires and the rest of the car are running in optimal shape rather than worrying that the engine or transmission could suddenly seize on you in the middle of a trip -- stranding you at the side of the road?
