I went with a w216 600 and couldn't be happier Iv'e always loved the w215's but I have heard horror stories from them. So far the only problem Iv'e had with it is a flat tire from a pothole LOL
but other than that it's been nothing but good
I would go with a 63 since they seem bulletproof so far.
Anyone read the CD issue couple months ago about used E63 VS SRT8? CD states the "OLD" AMG doesn't turn. I never drove an E63. Is the handling that bad?
i will be purchasing a 03-04 E55 AMG in the next couple months. As soon as my bonus comes in from work and I sell these other 2 cars, I will be making my purchase. There are several out here with under 100k and 1 owner cars for about $20k. All kinda of service records too.
The one good thing about buying a car like this is, most of the people who own them could afford to own them, and took care of the maintenance as required. Its not like buying an old honda or, god forbid, a 3000GT where the owners neglected the cars for whatever reason.
I see lots of the E55 Supercharged models rolling around town with 150k+ miles with very little issues.
My best friend DD's his 01 E55 AMG every day. 115k miles and going strong with ZERO mechanical issues.

I don't think the handling is that bad. From what I hear it's generally competitive. The M5 will handle better, but the AMG E class is tuned for a mixture of everyday practicality and weekend track car.
Most magazine reviewers seem to forget about one thing: driver skill. And they also forget that with time, drivers will get a feel for their car and know its limitations and advantages and how to properly exploit it (if it's a performance car).
Such is the case with this guy I know. I met him while visiting the famous Nurburgring a few years ago. Back then he drove a facelifted W203 C55 AMG and he's a very competitive driver. He told me he actually prefers the C55 AMG because it's, and I quote, "a challenge to drive". This guy obviously likes a challenge. From what he's told me, the C55 AMG is very front-heavy, yet with constant practice he's managed to refine his driving techniques in this car and he's also gotten to know the car. Suffice to say he can keep up and beat more nimbler cars on the racetrack which are also driven by highly skilled drivers.
I would NEVER buy an AMG out of warranty only because of all the horror stories i've seen/heard from my friends and all over the forums. But if I bought one with warranty, it would probably be a CLS55 or SL65 AMG

here's what i think. the car can handle just fine. but the car is a bit front long imho and also front heavy, so you have to fight with it a little. nothing like the balanced i feel in the m5. but again, once you adjust to the w211, it runs
Definitely E55. You're ok to have no warranty on AMG's if you know how to work on them. They're not all that difficult to work on. Working on Z32's causes more pain. If you're going to be taking it to stealerships then yea better get warranty or a good size reserve in your bank account.
When I need to replace my little 323i in a couple years, I'm seriously considering a W221 S65/63. Go about 5-6 years old, should run around 40k (vs. 220k new), and I haven't heard many issues with them, especially compared to the W220.
