Employee uses Facebook to trick Sandy woman into return stolen rental car
SALT LAKE CITY — An employee of a rental car company used Facebook to trick an alleged car thief into returning a stolen vehicle, police said.
Jennifer Marshall Hansen, 42, of Sandy, rented a 2009 Ford Explorer on Aug. 25 from Affordable Rent-A-Car, 4000 S. State, but failed to return it as scheduled Sept. 1, according to charges filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court.
Employees at the rental car company made numerous attempts to contact Hansen and find the vehicle, police said. One employee found the woman on Facebook and "friended" her. He then arranged a meeting with Hansen, according to the charges.
Hansen drove the stolen vehicle to the meeting, and the employee called police.
She is charged with one county of theft of a rental vehicle, a second-degree felony.
Some thoughts:
1. I thought rental cars were all equipped with GPS locating systems these days. Should have been easy to locate her.
2. What in the hell was going through her mind? Did she THINK that she would get away with this? Did she think that the rental place wasn't going to look for the car? Did she think the police weren't going to get involved? I mean, seriously, what the hell? I like to go to justice court occasionally to observe, and I just shake my head when people don't show up for their arraignments. Has this approach EVER worked out well in the end? People are so freaking unintelligent.
I agree, from the company's view, it was a good move on the employee's part.
But if that woman actually gets a jail sentence (which, with a felony, is likely), she's going to be mad......and looking for that employee.......when she gets out. Retaliation is often a problem when you help send someone to prison.
