FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif Oct. 1, 2010; Hyundai Motor America today announced all-time record September sales of 46,556, up 48% versus 2009. Retail sales were up 73%. For the year, Hyundai has reported total cumulative sales of 410,047, up 20% versus the same period in 2009, with retail sales up 26%. Fleet mix for the month was 14%.

"We are enthused to be actually building momentum as we exit the traditionally strong third quarter selling season and enter the 4th quarter under a full head of steam," said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales, Hyundai Motor America. "September's growth was led by a 161% sales increase by our game-changing 2011 Sonata and an all-time volume record for Genesis. In the 4th quarter, we expect continued growth as our 2011 Georgia-built Santa Fe reaches dealerships along with our all-new Alabama-built Sonata turbo producing 274 horsepower (more power than any V6 in the segment), while retaining 4-cylinder fuel-economy of 33 miles per gallon."

Comparing calendar year-to-date results for 2010 with 2009, Elantra, Sonata, Tucson and Genesis sales increased 22 percent, 59%, 131%, and 34%, respectively. Genesis sales of 3,230 represent an all-time sales record, and mark the 15th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases.

DETROIT, Oct. 1, 2010 September combined total sales for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac increased 22% to 172,969 units, driven by a combined 39% rebound in retail sales compared with last September. Each brand saw retail increases in excess of 21%, led by Buick, where retail sales were up 96% for the month.

September's results also reflect an effective and quick model-year transition – a dramatic departure from last year's changeover. Of GM's retail sales for the month, 53% were new (2011) model year vehicles – almost double last year's 27%. Dealer stock at the end of the month included 75% new model vehicles, compared to just 30% last year.

"We said our goal for this time of year was to achieve an orderly transition from past model to the new model year, and we've achieved that," said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. "This helps us lower our overall selling costs and positions us to come out of the gates quickly during the new model year."

Year to date through September, GM's four brands have sold 79,948 more units than were sold with 8 brands through September 2009. The company's brands also have increased retail sales by 15% through September, and have gained market share in each of the 1st 9 months this year.

"September's results are a continuation of positive momentum for our four brands and demonstrate that our plan is working,"
Johnson said. "With key products like our heavy-duty pickups, the Buick Regal and the Cadillac CTS Coupe launching now, and expanded capacity for the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain hitting dealer lots, we're ready to run."

Increased sales of crossovers and full-size pickups led GM's gains in September. Sales of the company's compact crossovers, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, rose 101%, while sales of mid-size crossovers, GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave increased 36%. The Cadillac SRX, remained the fastest growing luxury crossover, with sales up 41% during the month. Year-to-date, SRX sales have increased 319%. Sales for GM's full-size pickup trucks, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra rose 62% in September.

Month-end dealer inventory in the U.S. stood at about 478,000 units, which is about 26,000 higher compared to August, and about 55,000 higher than September 2009.

September Key Facts and Brand Results:

Buick: Buick reported total sales of 12,875, an increase of 36 percent compared to last year. Driven by continuing strong customer demand for the LaCrosse and Enclave (retail sales up 182 and 89 percent, respectively) and growing demand for the all-new Regal, Buick retail sales were up 96 percent for the month. With total sales up 58 percent this year, Buick remains the fastest growing major auto brand in the U.S.
This is truly remarkable. It proves that those who were saying, just a couple of years ago, that Buick was a soon-to-be-doomed geezer-brand whose customer-base was rapidly dying off were wrong. What remains to be seen, though (and, admittedly, the numbers here alone aren't conclusive) is how many of these customers are moving over from now-defunct Mercury.

Don't remember the last time Lexus fell this far behind. Their next-generation line-up really can't come any sooner.
I agree. For the year to date 2010 Lexus has sold 162,438 units which is probably more than BMW and Mercedes year to date 2010...Lexus should be able to sell over 200K units by the end of this year...

There is no denying the HS is a sales flop BUT let us not forget
- The HS first full month of sales was last September and its usually one of the best selling months for a new model.
- It was still riding the wave of Cash for Clunkers

I believe Sept 09 was its best selling month.

Yep, the HS is a complete flop even though it has awesome lease rates and discounts. I've seen a couple on the road

I wanna see how much killing the E and 5 did.....
National lease rates were $579 for M37 and $749 for M56. The 5 and E are the kings of the segment

Yes, Lexus has substantial discounts on the HS trying to move it. Dealers cannot stand the car and its a huge miss.

I know Lexus haters love the HS b/c its the first model in recent memory to just flop. So it gives them much needed ammunition.

Sadly the M37/56 is in the same boat as its selling at 50% of the rate as the previous model. Even in a downmarket (recession) they should be selling more.

Both flopped it up

It wouldn't be considered a flop unless it sells lower than the rest of the competition. Currently, that would be the RL and GS. Th GS has great engines and is definitely not outdated technology wise but doesn't currently sell well. Lets see what type of numbers the newly designed GS will have. If you want to compare last generation to current generation, this generation GS is a flop
