I was sad to see the 1Gen Avalon go. Its build quality, sense of solidness, and ride comfort, IMO, were all superior to the 2 and 3Gen models that followed it. We'll see, of course, what the new one will be like.

And longer life cycles is nothing new in the industry, being going on for over a decade.
Look at how long the VW New Beetle has been on the market now (since 1998), without a significant redesign. Only now is VW even considering even a minor facelift.

Of course, the New Beetle is a classic, retro-look vehicle that is not SUPPOSED to change every few years, but, if that is the case, they could have changed it, in the meantime, to look even MORE like the original.

Maybe, but the release was straight from Toyota and is listed at the main website.

Like I said, bummer and poorly written. At least it gives people on the internet something to chat about.

Yeah, well let's just hope the ES350 or Toyota Camry do not get poor refreshes in place of redesigns.

A car does not necessarily have to be re-done for significant improvements. The ES350 is a good example.......IMO, it got a very nice interior-trim upgade and other significant improvements for 2010, without a major redesign.

The same, hopefully, could be done with the Avalon, although (again IMO), eventually, Toyota is going to have to toss the Avalon's cheesy silver plastic and too-fake-looking woodtone for a real interior worthy of a flagship.

Unless the Avalon is able to reverse its ongoing sales slide the whole discussion a moot point.

Remember, when Toyota introduced the 2005 Avalon, it introduced Toyota to such things as dual VVTi, xenon lamps, heated/cooling seats, and I believe dual HVAC up front. This redesign or refresh is terrible.
This isn't the first time in history this has been done. I'd rather Toyota extend the life of the Avalon with another facelift then have them cancel the LFA or other programs of interest.

I missed the part about complaining about a vehicle that sells in small numbers, most here are not interested in and probably haven't even driven ANY Avalon.

I basically agree, even though the LF-A is going to be a very low-volume product. But that doesn't mean that the Avalon should go on exactly as is, or without some improvements.....the interior, IMO (see my post #140), has materials/trim unworthy of a Toyota flagship that is, otherwise, a Lexus-grade car.

I agree. I owned an '07 ES350 and recently bought a '10. The changes individually are minor, but they all add up to nice improvements/updates overall IMO.

I think it might be a SMART move by Toyota as the competiton in this segment has heated up directly or indirectly. I think they will evaluate what the Avalon needs to stay a winner.

Damn all I can say is that this new car is plain-jane boring. I imagine that me owning this car would wipe out at least ten years of my lifespan (due to severe depression and boredom of being in a car like that )

With that said, I'd rather have this vehicle instead

Angry Avalon experience

I would have to say that the new 2011 Avalon looks almost identical to the current generation Avalon interior wise. The exterior still looks the same with a different grill. I am currently on my second Avalon after owning a 1996 Avalon which lasted for 170,000 miles and 11 years!! The build quality was amazing and the car was extremely reliable and quiet. So needless to say, when it came time to replace it, I decided to purchase a brand new 2007 Toyota Avalon Limited with all of the upgrades. It was the biggest car buying mistake I have ever made!! From the moment I drove it off the showroom floor I was having difficulty with the brakes and the transmission. The transmission was always hunting for different gears and the brakes took forever to slow the car down. And of course, Toyota could not duplicate the problem. They brought all of their master tech's in to run tests but then they couldn't find anything wrong with the car!! It has been one problem after another. The build quality is just not up to toyota's standard and I will probably be replacing it soon with a used Lexus LS460. Oh how the mighty have fallen!!

I am glad that they redesigned the dash to accommodate an improved navigation screen, but otherwise I am looking for a completely redesigned model both inside and out. IMO the first gen Avalon looked the best; the second gen was not very nice on the outside, the third gen is improved and larger looking, but I'd like to see something that takes on the LaCrosse for styling and the Genesis for amenities.

That nav in the current Avalon was terrible with the way the joystick operates...I guess that is Toyota first semi-idrive controller for what it was.
