Last night I went to watch my high school play a football game up in Hialeah and took the Palmetto Expressway to get there. I checked the traffic speed via Google Earth before I went and everything looked a-ok from this perspective.

LOL. If I were still in Mexico City, this would not be out of the ordinary as there were people when I was there that would and did get up to that speed on the expressways.

Unlike Mexico City, though, in South Florida you can't bribe the average cop.

I went that fast while driving down in Baja, except it was kilometers, not miles per hour.

Are the roads in Baja physically in good enough shape for that? It has a reputation of being a very remote place, with relatively torn-up roads......one reason why traditional off-road SUVs are popular there.

Good question, but the roads are every bit as good as the rural roads in much of the US and in some cases better. It's mostly the affluent yuppie Americans that favor the SUVs down there. Regular cars work very well down there. Driving at night is not recommended because of wandering cattle in unfenced range land areas.

Remote is an accurate description outside of towns or cities, police patrols are very scarce.

Just some comments. You should consider traveling down there and renting a car. You can still rent stick shift/manual tranny cars.

I don't think a trip to Mexico would be safe. I had a friend who was shot in the leg during a bar fight between two drunk Mexican guys in a bar. Between that and the drug wars I am sticking to Hawaii. Mexico is and always will be a little shady for Americans. They will jack you if they have the chance because they know you have more money . In Hawaii they will over charge but not resort to violence or theft

I had another friend ( female) who was pulled over for speeding even though she was 10 under the limit. The cop pulled her over and just kept telling her that he liked her watch. Finally after 10 minutes she finally realized that she would have to give him her watch to get off. She did and was let go minus the watch. What's even more ghetto and more reason not to go back is that she was fluent in Spanish and still got jacked.

Certain parts of Mexico are not safe, just like many countries, agreed. But I tend to avoid bar fights. I'm pretty good at looking like a peasant when I travel., it helps. Not to mention my travel watch is made by Casio and cost $25, I have plenty.

Hawaii is cush too, but sometimes I get bored.

I think she figured since she was a latina she would be cool. Nope!! They still jacked her ***.

I was once on vacation in Jamaice and got into a cab. Long story short, the cab driver wouldnt stop the cab when I asked him to and just kept driving. He stopped to pick a person up and me and my wife jumped out and took off. Stuff like that and stuff like the killings and robberies in Mexico remind me that this is not the US any more. The rules are totally different

Yes, everybody knows about Jamaica too. But your point is well taken about safety overseas or even in some parts of the US, proceed with caution.
