Most manufacturers figured out long ago that if they understate their high powered cars they don't sell, if they don't sell they don't recoup the development costs, and people like to buy flash.

In my opinion sleepers are cars that are unexpectedly quick, unknown, or easily made quick via bolt ons without being loud/outlandish. A real sleeper fools the seasoned car guy, not the average Mustang driver with a loud exhaust.

Unexpectedly Quick:
Rav 4 V6
Tundra 5.7 V8

Unknown:
Phaeton W12
Passat W8

Bolt on sleeper:
Supercharged Buick Regal/Pontiac Grand Prix
--Many people putting smaller pulleys/bigger supercharger on these making them quick little stop light warriors. Then there is the GTP latest gen with LS4 V8 under the hood doing the same.

Nissan Maxima/Nissan Altima V6 Sedans/Nissan Quest
--The Altima coupe looks too sporty, but the sedans fly under the radar. They all have a version of the 350Z's V6 and a supportive aftermarket. Up until the latest gen all Maximas had a manual option and the stout engines were easy to turbo. 400whp Maximas are relatively easy to build and will surprise many a street car.

All the Chrysler 80's & 90's turbo cars
--10 second wood panel minivans exist.

Ford Police Cars/Just about anything with a Ford Modular V8
--Obviously ignoring Mustangs and the Marauder, the Ford V8 has been put into many cars including the Lincoln Mark VIII; I witnessed one take its near 4000lb bulk off the line quick enough to embarrass one stunned Z06 driver. If they make a part for the Mustang it probably swaps over with minimal modification to the rest of the modular family.

The list goes on and on...

Take a 98-02 Camaro Z28, take the badges off, put a quiet exhaust on it(or keep the stock exhaust), keep the stock wheels. BAM!!! Looks like any old v6 Camaro, with a couple of mods and sticky tires you're running a 12 second et. People really under-estimate the LS1 powered fbody, with a few mods they're just as fast or faster than the new muscle out on the street.

My 03 V6 Accord was pretty quick. I took out a modded Cobalt SS with ease once. It's weird how powerful the V6 Accord and Camry have gotten over the years.

The 90's V8 Lincolns were pretty quick to. The MKVIII had a good amount of power for a big coupe back then.
