The 1st gen. Taurus SHO. Wasn't a believer at first, but was very surprised at the performance. A heavily modded one is ever better.

Mitsu Galant VR4 gets my vote as well

The grand national is not a sleeper, but the car it is based on at the time the buick regal, having the same v6 and turbo.
Mercury marauder is another great sleeper basically a Grand Marquis with a mustang Cobra engine.
Of the same mold, buick roadmasters, especially the wagons, and chevy caprices are great sleepers having the LT1 corvette engine of the time, the Impala SS, less so most know what it is, but for the kid getting beat driving his riced out civic, he might say what the hell was that?

as mentioned the galant VR-4 is a great sleeper, only real car nuts know what it is, having the same 4g63 engine and turbo as the eclipse.

I read in a sport compact car article a while ago, about the tubo k cars of the 8o's, like the omini shelby glh(goes like hell), and daytona, they are big sleepers and are fast. Even some crazy mopar heads take the turbo engines from these k cars and put it in the chrysler minivan! read about one in Hot Rod doing 13sec quarter miles, imagine the humilation of being beat by a minivan!!

I could go on, I love sleepers!

all AMG and M cars are sleepers... I uess if you compare them to the cars that fall in the respective performance levels.

The best sleeper in my mind would be a stock G35 sedan . Even in journey trim that thing will dust many cars on the road in a big way

I second mercedes S65 AMG. That big burly sedan will dust my IS 350

But, if I had the capacity to buy a ~$200,000 vehicle, the S65 AMG would not be it. That car to me is suffering from identity crisis.

People in an S class mercedes aren't necessarily looking to be the fastest in a straight line.

For $200k, I'd get a normal Mercedes S 550 and maybe a GT-R or something for speed. Much better value, makes more sense to me.

The S65 AMG is for the ultra high net worth individuals with $30M+ in liquid assets who can EASILY afford the extra $100k for the better straight line performance (over the 550). Definitely not a value car, though.

My vote goes to the Lexus IS350, GS450h, and RX400h. The hybrid will surprise many drivers.

Don't know why the S60R keeps coming up. There is an "R" in the title and it does look more aggressive than the standard S60. Plus, even the IS350 is faster.
Do people know what a sleeper is?
Didn't expect the 400h to give my dad's 330xi a run for its money, but it sure did.

When you look at AMG or M cars, do they look fast?

I wouldn't call an AMG or an M car a sleeper. One would expect such a vehicle to go fast.

Just about anything in the form of a wagon.

V70R (Was my driver when I worked for them. The expression on peoples faces when I blew by them was priceless.)

E63 Wagon (didnt look that much different from a regular wagon, unless you were looking for the badge)

Legacy GT wagon (manual with the turbo when offered was a serious sleeper)

Maxima/Altima (for its time, it would give certain V8's a problem. Now everything in its class is just as fast or faster.)

GS450h (its a hybrid )

R63 AMG (only lasted for one year, looks identical to all other R-class models. Its basically a minivan.)

03 CL600, no AMG kit with ugly/weird 18inch dishes. Nobody know what car or how fast it is due to the pre 03 is only 360ish hp. It's speed is also eclipsed by the CL55 AMG and SL55 AMG getting a lot more presence and looks, without a AMG kit, you won't know what's comming...or went....

03+ 600 stock numbers are underrated due to it can't be put faster than the 55 AMG model, but oh no it's faster.... lol stock number is 493, but dyno is just about 10hp behind.
