Default Genesis 4.6 vs GS460 vs 300c vs E550

I just got my Motor Trend magazine and they tested the Genesis againts the GS460, E550 and 300c and the 4.6 Genesis tested better in every measure than the competiton.

The Genesis 460 was so good they kept on mentioning the LS as the real target that it should compared against.

I was wrong earlier in the other thread. There is now no need to pay $53k for a GS when you can get a much more competitive car for less.

Quote for MT

"Is the Genesis a knockout? Absolutely. A knockout? More of jarring right-left combo that'll leave Lexus a bit dazzled, shuffling a step or two back and realizing that Hyundai deserves its full attention and respect..."

Good to see all the positive praise to go along side the negative press this car has gotten as well. Can't please everyone. I don't quite see the Genesis going up against the LS though. That is a pretty large stretch. I think it pretty much bests most of the competition in the ES350 class range, but things start to get a lot tougher in the GS range much less the LS/S Class range.

Kudos to the Genesis, and Motor Trend likely is going to get quoted just like in their review of the Veracruz vs. RX 350, where they said the Veracruz won.

It's a very sensational headline, one that sells covers, and gets good publicity for Hyundai and MT.

Quite frankly though, I would not be surprised to see MT find many cars win comparos over Lexus. Their recent auto guide issue uses these words..

MT on the ES - "Walmart of luxury cars"
MT on the GS - "Fails"
MT on the LS - "no longer benchmark"

They had very little nice things to say about Lexus cars, save perhaps the IS. Funny thing is, since when has MT ever declared the LS a benchmark? While other magazines have, MT's comparos have placed the vehicle second or lower or last.

But anyhow, considering MT's already low opinion on Lexus, saying that Hyundai beats them is not a high bar IMO. If they said Hyundai was beating BMW or Mercedes it would be more momentous coming from MT.

Good for Hyundai! More competition in the market is a good thing whether you'd buy the Hyundai or not. It'll be interesting to see what the sales are.

That's awesome. However, my list would go like this:

1. Mercedes E550
2. Hyundai Genesis
3. Lexus GS460
4. Chrysler 300C

What is actually interesting is that nowhere on the cover does it mention anything about the test.

Interesting, that's quite unlike the Veracruz one, but it's almost certain that Hyundai will be running ads with it prominently featured. Moreover, it might depend on the newsstand or subscription cover, which often differs. I'm sure that Hyundai wanted as many covers as possible!

MT, like a number of other automotive magazines, cranks out awards for their largest advertisers. Note that most of the award-winning automobiles will have rather heavy ad placements over the next quarter. Coincidence? Don't put a great deal of significance in these "winners" or particularly "Car of the Year" and other annual award-winners either. It's just business: Buy the big ad package, get an award.

I couldn't help wondering about the Genesis 4.6, until I looked it up. "Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?" -Genesis 4:6 - the first recorded case of buyer's remorse?

I will say it again, I continue to be impressed by my Sonata and Hyundai's improved quality. When I was getting the oil done I sat in a 3.8 Genesis in black at the dealership... it is a VERY impressive car, reminded me strongly of the 5-series...

What a bizarre group for a comparo. Of course it is obvious all the sentiment that has been voiced on the Genesis but no one seems to want to really think about the fact that instead of being arrogant and stupid that just maybe Hyundai did exactly what they meant to do in making the Genesis a Hyundai rather than trying to make a luxury brand. Maybe the Genesis needs to be looked at more as a competitor to the 300c and maybe Avalon or Buick rather than the GS and E, not to mention the LS. The fact that a car that is actually more appropriately compared to the Chrysler or Buick or Toyota IMO being able to be considered to compete against the GS, LS, E, 5, etc., is just an astounding achievement. Of course the price point is what puts it in the class I propose and that makes compromises that are going to show up against more expensive brand/models.

I just can't help feel that putting the Genisis in a comparo against an E550 is either pointing out how poor the current gen E is or pointing out what an achievement the Genesis is. But I sincerely doubt that very many people are going to cross shop the Genesis and E. MT has really put together a bizarre group IMO.

Absolutely not. All cars tested were RWD, V8, sedans. There was no complaining about fwd vs rwd etc. A very fair test.

I think that by winning the comparo it tells you that Lexus needs to bring down there prices a lot or offer better performance and luxury for the price.

I highly doubt that Lexus is ever going to consider lowering their prices to better compete w/ Hyundai. That is what they have Toyota for.

Now if Hyundai transforms itself into a luxury brand ...

I could put together a Miata, Corvette, Elise, Veyron comparo on the basis that they are all RWD two seaters, but it would be bizarre as well. When you justify comparos on technologies and not prices, you leave yourself open to making unfair comparisons.

The point is well taken on Lexus pricing but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Lexus to drop prices. They are still under the europeans and in recent years my take is they are trying to close that gap, not increase it.

Like others have said here, Motor Trend has never ever been particularly fond of Lexus and sensationalist headlines sell magazines and also get them publicity in Hyundai's commercial that will clearly quote this test.

I also agree with Ron430...this is really an apples to oranges test with all things considered.

Additionally, if the Hyundai got from 0-60 and the 1/4 faster than the 382HP E550 then I simply call this test straight up BS. In Motor Trend's last test of the E550 (GS, XF, 5 comparo) it ran 0-60 in less than 5 seconds and we all know the Genesis isn't capable of that.

Furthermore, if the GS350 from Edmunds outran the Genesis, I'm puzzled as to how the 460 was slower, despite how all of you are going to tell me that the 350 is faster. In the real world, it isn't.
