Will GM make it?
They are taking steps to survive, but I don't know if their efforts are "too late."

GM will be fine.
They have invested very heavily into their new products- Aura, Astra, Malibu, Traverse, Acadia, Outlook, Sky, Solstice, hybrids, Yukon, CTS, G8, CTS-V, Camaro, Enclave, new LaCrosse, etc. This is a completely different type of GM than we saw just 4 years ago- beautiful interiors, strong engines and transmissions, decent styling, and well thought out features.
These are, for the first time, vehicles are are really on the same playing field as their Japanese and German competitors. Malibu and Aura are very legitimate CamCord competitors, G8 gets back to the heart of what a Pontiac is supposed to be, new CTS is wonderful, crossovers are all very competitive, Volt is coming, etc.
All in all, because of their solid new products I really think GM will be fine, but many of these cars aren't coming a minute too late. Ford is the one that I am most worried about. Their product line is completely, completely lack luster. All of their new sedans seem like more of the same "Ok, we tried" Ford attitude and do not remotely measure up to the level of effort that GM has put in. Chrysler...forget it.
You build a good product and people will come for it. GM now has some very good cars, trucks, coupes, hybrids, and SAVs in their stable and they will obviously benefit IMO.

I hope so, for our economies sake.
It hurts me as an American to see our auto companies struggle and other companies just come in here and do so well, even if some have crappy or just as average products.
The only American car it seems desirable around the world is the Corvette. To the world, they are most junk or maybe average (new CTS for example).
It makes no sense for their product lineups to be so large and not even 1/2 truly competitive.
I also want people to WAKE UP and give them a shot. People rather buy an ugly American made Honda, Toyota or Nissan instead of a comparble Ford or GM.

I'm betting that GM goes for Chapter 11, Reorganization within the next year or two, and then dumps current union contracts, pensions, and health plans. Stays in 11 with debtor in possession for several years, then comes out with zero baggage. Also think that Ford and Chrysler will follow suit.

While I will agree that GM is in dismal shape (I think they lost something like $15B in the 2nd quarter), I also believe that they will make it to and thru 2010.

So better cars and happy customers will get them through to 2010.

I owned one GM car and that was way to much in 1974 it only lasted 14 months 7,000 miles the engine was rebuilt brakes were shot 1,000 foot to stop at 50 mph not to mention two recalls one safety related that I never got and GM did not care at all.

GM will make it. No bail out, no chapter 11. The economy is tough right now, but once we recover, consumers will see, as they already have, the enormous strides GM has made in quality and reliability. GM will flourish in the future.

my old man tells me story's of the GM he owned, no warranties just 30 days or 1000 miles
back then Ford and Chrysler where no better but the cars where relatively cheap to fix
so what did you do buy a Beetle

Just saw this panel discussion on CNBC the other day and it was all about a bailout for GM. Frankly I think when their top CEO gets paid more than multiple Toyota execs (allegedly), plus their other problems, there needs to be drastic changes.
I do think GM will make it, no thanks to their **** poor designs of the last decade or two. I think GM is starting to wake up and realize that no one is going to buy their cars unless they look good, drive good, and have some quality. Gone are the easy days of selling junk to Americans, they have too much competition to survive if they take that attitude, and I think they have finally realized it.
