is there a mod out there to make a non-relescoping steering wheel telescope?
the one thing that bugs me every time i drive is that the steering wheel on my IS300 doesn't telescope ... and i know i'd be a hella lot happier if it did telescope ...
specifics: automatic IS300 fully loaded w. button shifters for M mode one the steering wheel
MIght have to take it to Chip Foose for a custom job. Seriously though, I don't think there is an aftermarket solution. Only way to do it is if another trim level of the same car had it as an option and swap the OEM column in. And if you wanted the automatic electric telescope steering column expect to pay thousands.
If it was never an option for the car I doubt it can be done (short of spending a BUNDLE and still you might not find someone who could do it) particularly because of safety and liability concerns.
IF it was an option for the car, you might be able to get all the OEM parts and put it in, but again I think this would cost a fortune unless you got it from a junk yard.
No, but you can get an aftermarket steering wheel with a quick release/hub that'll extend out further. I don't know if you can get one with buttons that will support the use of e-shift though.
that's kinda what i thought ... and BOO THAT ... i was so hoping that there was a mod,
i'm tall so i sit quite far back (for the legs) and at somewhat of an angle (for the back) and the steering wheel ends up being a smidge to far, but if i change the back angle then i feel cramped ... now THIS is going to sound even stranger than the first question:
is there a better seating position? ie: equally as comfortable but works better for the non-telescoping wheel? how do the tall ppl of CL sit? or am i the only tall one w. the non-telescoping wheel?
Just wondering, but when you bring the seat back angle forward, why would you feel cramped if you bring it to just an angle to get your arms comfortable on the wheel?
Oh and I can relate about finding a comfortable position in my Miata which doesn't have a telescoping wheel either. I'm 6'3" so not a typical Miata driver and with seat all the way back my arms felt ok on the steering wheel but there were a couple of issues with my feet position given my long legs. The dead pedal was too thick forcing my left knee to be pretty bent. Maybe this was designed to get ones foot back on the clutch easily but it was uncomfortable on longer highway drives so I removed the big plastic dead pedal 'block', cut off about 2" and re-installed it. PERFECT. Then I learned on a forum that the gas pedal could be moved further away EASILY with still tons of room for WOT so I did that and my driving position became a whole lot more comfortable.
Not sure if/how this applies to your situation but it might give you an idea!
I think i feel cramped not becuse of actual space but because of how my back feels, the angle makes my back feel off somehow ... its hard to explain but i've tried different seat back angles and ya know how there's the 'rite spot'? well my 'rite spot' is too damn far from the wheel!
i'm interested about this moving the pedals tho ... can the pedals on the IS be easilly moved? ... * i hope i hope i hope *
next time i drive that car i'll try and figure out how and/or why it makes my back feel funny ... somehow i think i'm going to eng up drawing a diagram or something ...
