Default Best engine oil!?

Hi guys,

Do you know which brand(with model) of engine oil is the best?

Which brands are of the highest price-performance?

Someone said that they use a certain brand(very expensive) once in a while to clear the engine, than switch back to a cheaper one...is it a good strategy?

I heard that using better engine oil will have a lot of benefits.

There are no best. Engine oil is like deodorant. Some people prefer one over the other. Each applications requires different oil. Some of the better brands out there are German castrol, amsoil, redline, royal purple, etc. Theres too many to list.

see above

A good strategy would be to change your oil on time to avoid sludging. If you change your oil the way you're suppose to (forget the older toyota sludge problem), then there is no reason why you should change to a more expensive oil to 'clean' the engine. If it's clean from the start, it shouldn't need cleaning later on.

going from regular dino oil to synthetic will give you benefits such as better engine protection in extreme climates. But going from one brand name to another isn't going to give you any real benefits.

If the Toyota/Honda guys can get 300k+ miles out of their engine with regular oil, then its good enough. Pick what you like and stick with it.

I'm sure you're expecting some concrete answers, but in reality, choosing oil is mostly preference. I'm running pennzoil just because it's cheaper than my amsoil setup, and my car drives the same.

I live in vancouver and some racing shops carry Lubro and Motul. As for Shell Helix Ultra, I have to either order it online or buy it from a Ferrari/Maserati dealership.

Lubro Moly also goes by the name Liqui Moly. I am experimenting with their 5W30 at the moment (since German Castrol is no longer sold down here, just the American Castrol 0W30).

There are some RX300 owners I talked to in Brazil that love the Shell Helix oil.

Can't speak for synthetics, but for regular petroleum oil, it's hard to beat Castrol GTX. Right behind Castrol is Valvoline, Penzoil, and Kendall (if you can still find Kendall). In general, use what the Owners' Manual and the auto manufacturer recommends. For older cars, you can use a newer and later oil grade signified by higher alphabet letters (I believe the latest is SM) but NEVER use an older grade of oil on a newer car. Older engines with worn rings, bearings, and valve seals (within reason) can sometimes benefit from "High-Mileage" oil that is a little thicker than oil recommended for new engines and has a different additive package...it helps seal up worn tolerances and won't leak or burn as fast as the thin oils recommended for new engines. But, obviously, with time, don't expect it to replace a needed engine rebuild....high mileage oils cannot replace worn parts.

Using any of a decent-quality motor oil will yield about the same results. Some people use Redline, Royal Purple, and Mobil1. I've stuck with the German Castrol, which works fine.

How exactly? I haven't used Castrol in years so I'm just curious. Does the box or bottle say made in Germany or someting? How do you tell the difference?
