2008 Toyota Corolla
Wow, comparing a Civic Si to a Corolla?? There's like a $5,000 price difference. So next up is: BMW M3 verses Lexus ES350?
....Toyota wasted their time with the S branded model, because it did nothing for the car where as the Si does plenty out of the box for the Civic. Any car enthuesiast no matter your flavor would know that the motor in the Civic Si (K Series) can never be compared to the motor in the Corolla or Corolla S, there is just simply no comparison, other than their body sizes.

Last time I checked, sales figures show that people prefer Corolla over Civic and Mazda3. A LOT more Corolla's are bought than the 3 actually. More people consistantly choose Corolla over any other small car. It's the 3rd best selling car in America (after Camry and Accord). And yet we have all these people saying it has no appeal.
See above. Millions of Corolla buyers think otherwise. We can't all own a Lexus or BMW.

Because the topic was about whether the Civic handles better than the Corolla. Remove the Si, insert the LX or EX, and our stance on this topic will remain.
And they also don't do anything to make it perform like an "S". So it stands to reason that they wouldn't add a few grand to the pricetag.
Then they shouldn't call it an "S".

totally agree, corolla for a long time has struck me as generic 'car' ... if a cop asked 'could u discribe the car miss?' i would say 'uh, it was like ur generic car, a toyota or something'
for some reason corolla is a best seller, but i think its because toy has a rep of making totally reliable cars ... i think if corolla were a little more asthetically pleasing sales would go up ... because then ppl chould have reliable AND non ugly/boring

2007 sales through April.
Corolla = 120,418 units
Civic = 106,670 units (97,295 regular + 9,375 hybrid versions)
Mazda 3 = 39,972 units

If I had to guess why the Corolla sales are better than the civc, I would say its because most of the Corolla's line-up is considerably cheaper than the civic's, making it more affordable for most people.
MSRP:
Corolla CE: $14,305
Corolla S: $15,350
Corolla LE: $15,515
Civic DX: $15,010
Civic LX: $16,960
Civic EX: $18,710

The Mazda3 and Mini are still the best cars IMO for that segment of the market. They have a personality and are quite fun to drive. The Civic is nice too, I just can't get over its awful looks. However, the steering is responsive (if not a tad light), handling is good, and engine provides decent punch.
The Corolla is kinda like most other Toyota products: vanilla ice cream. Not much to hate about it, but not much to drool over either. But many people want a reliable appliance that gets them from A to B with low fuel consumption, and the Corolla does that task.

Great point. Most corolla buyers buy the car for transporation. They just need a reliable car that gets great mileage. Not to mention, it's affordable (more so than the civic). A friend of mine bought one just for daily commute and it does a great job of it. Not everyone is a car fanatic, thus many Toyota products fit the bill.
Yes.....and vanilla ice cream tastes pretty good, too, just like it is. You don't try and add Jalapeno peppers to it.

Again, why are we comparing Si's to the Corolla? Notice the Corolla S doesn't add 5 or 6K onto the price tag. It's about the same price as the LX but with sportier wheels, side skirts, spoiler, ect. It's not made to be a sports car.

I've never seen so much stirred up emotion by an emotionless car. Cool.
But on topic, the Corolla is just too bland for my tastes, but them my taste in cars doesn't apply to most people. People want basic, cheap transportation and the Corolla delivers that.
You want some fun with your cheap, or have a lifelong dream of being a ricer, buy a Civic Si. I don't plan on owning either so it really doesn't matter to me, but the Civic is undeniably more exciting to both drive and look at.

(No, literally I do. Nothing to do with cars)
