Default VVTI vs VTEC

Hi guys,

Not sure where to post this, but can someone explain the difference betwen VVTI and iVTEC? I thought both did similar things, but it kills me when these honda guys say, "when vtec kicks in I pulled by 2 cl" LOL

Hi guys,

I believe that VVTI is similiar in principle but uses different methods to achieve similiar results.

Thanks for the link... I have a pretty good idea on how variable valve timing works, but these honda guys think VTEC is like a turbo or something. You dont see us saying when VVTI kicks in we pull bus lengths.

if you've ever driven an S2000 or hi horsepower RSX or GSR VTEC is really pronounced, it's literally a night and day type feeling. In my S, underneath 6k the car was an accord, above the power basically doubled and the pull to redline was pronounced. AFAIK, VVTI is tuned for smoother, less noticible gains but a smoother powerband. The celica's VVTL-I is more like VTEC then VVTI is IMO.

Oh I agree!!!!! My feeling is that a large population of the Honda community is made up of new/young drivers, that don't fully understand internal combustion engines yet. The almost Consider VTEC something you can "unbolt" and "reattach" to another engine. To that effect, they think it is almost, like you said, some type of power adder.

While the innovation of VTEC cannot be denied and it ability to increase effeciency is great, it is not the be-all-end-all that some newbie Honda guys think it is.

its not the end all be all of technology but it is essentially two different feelings.

Now the I-VTEC is supposed to be more like VVTI in terms of no sharp cam change over and power delivery.

I believe i-VTEC is more advanced than VVT-i. The equivalent technology from Toyota is VVTL-i, which strangely hasn't seen much implementation so far.

I'll give you that. And I agree with your earlier post about feeling a surge when VTEC changes the cam lobe. I'm sure it can even be felt in a standard Civic that has VTEC.

I'm just stating that some "boy racers" if you will, don't really understand what they are talking about when they discuss it. They seem to consider it in the same vein as a turbo, in that it is an additional power adder and not something that inherent in the design of the engine itself.

I drive my girls TL, and although it does scoot along very nicely I just don't feel that overwhelming 2 car length pull when VTEC kicks in. No doubt that VTEC is very innovative, but it's lost some of it's luster since introduction.

The only car I have really felt Vtec "kick in" is in my TL-S. I don't feel anything in my Moms 4cyl Accord. But there is a great difference felt in power with my TL. And no, I don't pull car lengths when it kicks in...that's just stupid.

i agree, in the heavier cars you won't feel the crossover as much, in the lighter cars its more noticeble.
