Normally 3-5 months or 3000-5000 miles is best depending on driving conditions. In addition, I recommend one at 1000-1500 miles (right after break-in) on a brand-new car to get the shavings out, except for Honda / Acura products that have break-in oil at the factory that they want left in for 3000 miles.
Some engines....like Toyota's 3.0L V6.......you MUST change the oil at least that often. They will NOT forgive long drain intervals.

Full synthetics ( which IMO are needed only in extreme climates ) can go a little longer but should still not exceed the manufacturers' recommendations.

I can't believe someone would do that to their car What's really embarassing is that the owner of the car is a lawyer

What an idiot.

Curious. Why is it that most manufacturer recommendations for oil change intervals are like
7,500 miles? That thread says that BMW recommends it every 15,000 miles!
Yet, it is generally accepted practice to do it every 3,000 miles. Is it the oil change businesses that created the 3,000 mile recommendation? Why would the auto makers be wrong? And wouldn't they also recommend a lower interval rather than higher?

Time can deteriorate oil, too...not just mileage. A garage queen will also need changes at reasonable time intervals even if there aren't many miles on it since the last change.

Saw this comment in that thread:

That is not uncommon among non-fanatics across every make and model.

Let's face it, most people drive their cars for 2 or 3 years and then get rid of it. So it doesn't matter if you change the oil.

Well we know that car isn't going to last very long. I just don't understand when people don't take care of cars man. An Oil change isn't alot of money at all, and they refuse to change the oil. Not all used cars are bad

I see that manufacture recomendations for my car is 7500... Ive always done it at 3000 or as soon as I can if not 3000 Im a hard driver.. So I figured better safe then sorry.

What about air filters? How often? I ussually done by visual inspection...

My father's 740iL calls for oil changes every 10K, and it has to be done ONLY at the dealership (no private garage, no oil lube shop). I'm guessing the Bimmer factory oil is a special synthetic blend.

Oh, and he tells me that he pays around $150 at every BMW oil change! I can't imagine paying that much for an oil change in my Lexus
