According to my friend eric, when performing "spirited driving" in a car with an automatic transmission, you should release pressure on the accelerator when the tranny shifts. He says it is murder on the transmission if you dont do this. Is this true? Is it true for normal driving as well?

Your freind is correct in the very old cars with the first automatic trannys.... It is better to release some throttle and allow them to shift.

If you read brian longs book about lexus, one of the interesting things I found was they engineered the drivetrain to lower all torque when the tranny shifts. This does make the car slightly slower, but greatly reduces the strain on the transmissions of lexus cars to nearly nothing. (In other words, you can do 0-100 full throttle all day long, and it wont really hurt the car.)

yeah, i have noiticed how tough this tranny is.

the very first week i had it i did something really stupid.

thinking i had a manual (after having driven one from the age of 14), i came arond the corner of my street.

as i did so, i reached for the gearshift and automatically went through the motions of downshifting from 2nd to first gear.

i push the button!! on the shifter and it through neutral, into reverse at about 10 MPH. immediately the front tires locked, bring the car to a halt with a quick chirp. the engine stalled...

all of this happened within the span of a second. i put it in park and reached for the key. she started right back up...then i reached down and put it back in drive...and off i go.

i still cant believe that the damned thing didnt grenade on me rigththere.

i cant believe i had to PUSH THE BUTTON on the shifter to shift from N-R and i STILL managed to do this without realizing what i was doing...until it was too late.

these trannys seem nigh near indestuctible. it had bruned fluid in it for god knows how long, that is still dark red, would like it to be bright red. it has had 2 drain and fills and a filter change.

takes a lickin and keeps on ticking. but i really do baby the car. for the most part, i keep the revs under 3500.

i stopped doing that floor and then let go of gas pedal when something weird happened. I was on a street and I was going about 30 and gaining speed... then I needed to slow down, and then I floored it again. When I came to a stop I got rough idle
