echo might be another good option.. i wonder what's the theft rate on the used corollas and echos. i rememeber 2 years ago camery's most stolen model. seeing my friend's gs getting smashed, i def. am much more aware of the elements of the real world now. plus, it's likely that i'll relocate so sometimes we shall anticipate not having the luxury of home protection.

oh no... not the echo! while it is amazing on gas, IMO it is toyota's ugliest vehicle.

actually, gas can be pretty high if a person needs to travel @ least 40 miles a day. and some otherdays 100miles/day. i'm not doing that rite now, but once relocated, i'll be part of the l.a. traffic everyday. oh no! lol.

If you can get over the styling issue of the Echo, then yes, it makes for a terrific gas-saving mobile. Car and Driver recently held a Frugalympics and Echo did superbly in that regard. But then again, you'll have to get over the styling issue.

The recent facelift does make it look not nearly as bad as when it first came out, though.

If you don't mind buying used, then a Corolla is indeed the best choice by far, with the gas mileage not far behind.

The engine is noisy, the interior and dash are rather stark, the ride is bumpy, the doors are tinny, and the 6/60 drivetrain waranty is OK but cannot match Hyundai / Kia's 10 / 100,000 or 5-year bumper-to-bumper. It DOES come in some nice bright colors, though...especially the hatchback, but other than that, in my opinion, the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent are noticeably better entry-level cars for the money...especially the Accent.
True, but just keep in mind that the street price for the 5-door Aveo is about $2500 lower than the 5-door Rio. That's still quite a difference.

Again, that is if the buyer insists on buying a new car. A used Corolla really makes a lot more sense.

Why not get a hybrid Civic. It gets around 50mpg and it can look nice with right set of rims and a little lowered. Also look into that new Toyota hybrid. One of the guys I know had it for couple of months and it was a nice car for what it was.

It appears that talgrl is looking at the sub 11k range so the hybrids could be out of question.

The Echo mechanically is a great car...very well-built, and economical. The question is: can you take the styling? If so...go for it.
You are correct that Camrys (and Accords) are high on the list of stolen cars. This is because of the fact that so many new ones are sold each year, there is a high demand for replacement parts by unscrupulous repair shops and body shops....and for replacement air bags after accidents. Most shops, of course, are honest, but some shady ones send guys out to steal cheap used parts for them. They steal whole cars and chop them up. But.....if you really want a used Camry, however (and it is an excellent all-around car), I wouldn't let that stop you. That is what you have insurance for....and the chances of any ONE Camry or Corolla getting stolen are pretty slim.

yuppies echo's styling is ok. i just need to see about the interior room myself. i'm expecting it's not gonna be a comfy ride, geez what to do when i have my dress suits on? the leather seats are gentle to those clothing. but cloth seats are gonna put more wear to the clothes.

it's nice to know one can still drive a camery or corolla with some ease.
hopefully no one will try to knock the window out of this echo lol

jpa, how about corning?? i love hard corning in my gs. and look what i've just found out about echo.

/////The parsimonious Echo is a thinly upholstered box utterly lacking in spirit, smallest by far in dimensions, weight, and price. Our drivers dreaded taking their turns in the disjointed driving position./////

strut bars for civic? i think a used civic is prolly gonna be a tad more expensive than a used echo.. but the modding is indefinite. a philosphical question- can a civic ever be tastefully VIP'ed? or is it born a ricer? hahaha

But this plushest of the Civics adds a dashboard driving game that'll seduce even the Deloitte & Touche types who would normally take the bus. It's EZ, just one dial with two bar graphs. There's one for battery charge level (think of saving) and one for rate of spending

indeed, that's one of th 2 things i love about the civic hybrids- one's the EZ, the other's the arm rest

can O.L.T. customize an EZ dial for us??!!
