I've Noticed a Recent Change in Car Chat Posting.

Recently, I've noticed what is, IMHO, a somewhat disturbing trend in the Car Chat forum....the growing use of four-letter curse/swear and obscene words. I'm all for the First Amendment and Free-Speech rights (I sometimes rant about things myself)...but do we REALLY need to use the S-word, F-word, and other crude low-life terms? We have a posting-code here in CL, and I don't think it is asking too much of us to abide by it. I myself feel strongly about some issues, and sometimes disagree with other members on them......but I try to keep my posts and replies free of abusive language. Once in a great while, I'll use a term like moronic or idiotic in my post to describe something, but I never accuse another CL member of being one. After all, we (hopefully) aren't spoiled teen-agers , we supposedly are generally mature adults, with critical-thinking skills, and IMO this is not the place for gutter-talk.

Thanks for listening.

I just found out Dr Dre...Didn't go to med school.

The foul word editor filter was removed a few months ago.
Everyone's an adult... and the new leadership thought it was unnecessary. Now, if someone is swearing at you directly, calling a "F'ing what-have-you!!"...then its an issue. Report it.
If someone says "The F'ing Jeep 4Xe is a Piece of S__t!!!" It would be me saying it. And within the new rules/lines.

To be fair, it was a mixed bag amongst the moderators if the no-no-word editor being turned off was bad.

Hey Mike thanks for the feedback. We are letting our hair down a bit and the curse filter is a bit looser. I agree it’s not necessary to curse but some will to describe something. I certainly hope it’s not to attack people and they will be handled differently.

Like I said in the other thread we also need people to not be easily offended and defensive. if it gets out of hand the team will discuss.

Thank you for all your contributions here.

Honestly this might just be a generational thing. I hear plenty of profanity in a professional setting at work. Partners making several hundred thousand a year dropping F-bombs in meetings.

Profanity is not a sign of a lack of critical thinking skills.

agreed with the above, being adults and mature doesn't mean no foul language. i look at it as the appropriate use of it.

same with me at work. i work in a professional environment and when in meetings with directors and vp, you hear f-words all the time. definitely not saying we should knock down the gate and let words fly left and right, and i definitely try to refrain from using it.

If I am one of the people you are referring to, or not, I own it. I have used the F word here, and maybe the S word, but not overly excessive. I was not privy to your "posting code", but I really wouldn't care about it because I live by my own code.

I make no apologies if someone hears or reads something I say is offended by it. All I can say is that if I intentionally wish to offend anyone, it would be done with conviction. That said, I recommend you or anyone reading this post to stop reading what I post in the future if the occasional cuss word offends you.

Cheers!

I purposely did not use any names.......because I was not aiming at any one particular person. I merely stated what was clearly a recent trend....a trend we did not have for most of the 23 years I have been at CL

.......and I would particularly like to commend LEXUS_KID for his wonderful "Fresh Manna of the Day" forum. We could all (wisely) learn from those excellent daily posts.

we didn’t have curse words because there was a filter masking most instances. that filter was removed a while back (aside, but before 1sicklex and i become involved in things again).

sorry if the curse words bother you, but the removal of the filter likely won’t be changed.

As long as things don't get personal I don't have too much of a problem using curse words, but to use them for the sake of just using them isn't necessary. They can be descriptive however.

I don't think it's fair to categorize "cuss" words or "gutter" talk as "abusive language".

Look around you, on TV, the internet, government officials, everywhere. As society develops and becomes more casual, use of language follows. Of course, this doesn't mean you have to like it, and that you don't have a point. But using bad words, in and of itself, is not "abusive".

William (Bill) hasn't had his (amazing) GS in like 16+ years... But continues to post here with those.
He runs a Mortgage broker in Chicago land. Many people were able to buy their 1st house because of him.
He's one of those good people that you want to be when you grow up.

I say and hear cuss words every day so it's no different when I'm on the forums.

That being said, I don't use it excessively either but I'm not mad when I see/hear it.

I feel the use of "4 letter words" here on CL reflects their usage in society in general. Prime time basic cable shows frequently broadcast such words, including the "f" word. 30 years ago, it made national headlines when prime time shows started airing the "s" word.
