Only one I haven't overheated was the D4 W12 since it was able to able to carry much more speed in the turns so I didn't have to brake as much. The 4.0 would start to plow 15-20mph lower in sweepers etc so I glazed the hell out of the brakes and lost 1/3 pedal
And that’s with the cruse set to 80. Forgot to try eco mode again in the mountains. Oh well!

it must be seen to be believed.

Their bathrooms are insanely clean. They are also little self contained rooms with full doors and total privacy.

All cleaned up.

I did pick up a couple of rocks that went through my PPF. Luckily this is just one strip of PPF above the grille, I will have my guy replace it next week sometime.

Also, a rock chipped the Mercedes logo. I’ll order a new one and have him replace it when he replaces that peice of PPF, he will have to remove that emblem anyways.

Does the eco mode make a noticeable change at speeds like that? For MPG to be clear not anything else

Didn’t try it on the trip. In general what eco mode does is it will shut the engine off when there is no load demand. I have experienced that before, what I wanted to try was to see how long it would keep the engine off say going down a 5% or 7% grade. I would imagine on a trip like this it would have an impact on fuel economy.

Interesting, I wouldn't expect it to help in that situation but maybe it does something clever. Most newer cars with locking converters will just cut fuel/spark on a decent if you don't engine brake in gear for in theory no fuel use but since yours can decouple there wouldn't pumping losses dragging the engine along

Losing some of the engine-driven functions, from an engine shut-off, on a long 7% downgrade like Sandstone Mountain (or, even worse, the 9-10% grade at Uniontown, PA) could be dangerous. For years, many vehicles used vacuum-actuation for the power-assist for the brakes, although some newer vehicles (which I assume would include your S-class) use electric-boost.

You can buy food in buceees and eat it in the bathroom. That’s how clean their bathrooms are. Good place to take a 💩

Also there’s no wait. They have almost as many urinals/toilets as they have gas pumps. And if you walk out without cleaning your hands, you’re just a nasty MF’er because there’s a hand sanitizer dispenser by every urinal in addition to the sinks.

48V hybrid. All that stuff is electric.

There's no way they would do it otherwise. Any engineer who suggested shutting off the engine on a downgrade on a vehicle with vacuum-actuated brakes would be eviscerated by the Legal department.

maybe they’d call it ‘flintstones mode’ where you brake with your feet?

yabadabadoo.

Yes, I understand the legal ramifications of that......I thought I made that clear. But are you saying that, with an all-electric system, if and when the engine shuts off and there is no more current being made by the alternator, the system then maintains the electrical boost for the power-brakes from the battery?...or maybe a large capacitor?

I like the road trip experiences in the Big Body Benz. That is one hell of a nice car! I still have IS500 on the brain. 🤓

Yes, there's a battery. Also, the Starter/Generator sits between the transmission and the engine. So depending on how that's set up (I haven't gotten into the weeds with it), it could still be leveraged to generate current while coasting with the engine off.

Edit: yep, confirmed it can do that:

"Coasting" Mode for Increased Efficiency In certain driving conditions, particularly on highways, the combustion engine can temporarily shut off, allowing "coasting" while maintaining essential vehicle functions.

Not many cars top an S-Class for high speed comfort. And never really have.

I actually usually put the suspension in sport mode on a long highway trip. It flattens out the ride. They tend to float around a little in comfort.
