Note though that to others in this thread the idea of a person for whom a 50% increase in gas prices squeezes them financially must be a compulsive gambler, addicted to cigarettes, are poor decision makers, spendthrift with their money...its ridiculous.
not sure anyone came right out and said that, but sadly it is true though that many lower income folks buy lottery tickets and waste a lot of money in the futile hope of a better future.

And considering that in most states the government has the monopoly on running the lottery, it tells you everything you need to know about the government’s concern for the welfare of their constituents, and how much they care how gas prices affect those who are already struggling.
Not everybody with tight finances is a gambling, smoking, junkie. I know plenty of people who struggle to get by while living frugally, making all their meals at home, and not using vices. Have 2 or 3 kids on the median household income and see just how tight things can get, even without your assumptions that the only reason they could be low on funds is because they blew it all at the casino.

I don't, but I have interacted with plenty of those types and have helped them out on many occasions for nothing in return. It's not like I leer at them from an ivory tower, my shop is in Marengo county for crying out loud lol!

The people you describe are not the people we are talking about is my point. We're talking about everyday working people who earn around the median income.
I filled up Apr 9th...
I'm still almost at a full tank and have been driving around everyday since... Mostly local errand trips. I make sure to run the gas motor for a little bit every trip (to avoid triggering Jeep FORM)
Something to be said about PHEVs Even low 25mile range ones like mine.
