General Car Conversation 2025 - Part 1
I’m pretty young here. So it’s safe to say I’ve never been in a car that required turning the A/C off to get up to speed.
Although my first car was a 2007 Volvo XC90 wasn’t the fastest car in the world with a 0-60 time of 9.1 seconds. As long as I revved the snot out of it, it would get up the highway speeds quickly enough for me.

i miss that engine... it was a specially designed narrow V8 for transverse applications, and famously assembled by yamaha themselves!

My first car was a 1972 Fiat 124 sedan. It was a 1438 cc pushrod inline 4 mated to a 3 speed automatic. Fiat stopped offering the 4 speed manual either in or just before 1972 because American drivers used to shift at low RPMs and lug the engine, which according to the word on the street, was problematic for these cars.
With a pavement peeling 68 bhp, the 124 would do 0-60 in about 14 seconds. Thing is, I was a 16 year old high school sophomore and I had a car, so it was cool regardless lol.

but what you said is true! it's part of the reason the "italian tuneup" exists since those old engines don't like it if they don't get to stretch their legs every now and then
Oh I wish! Mine had the lame 3.2 liter SI6. But my 2007 RX 350 that replaced the XC90 was much quicker.

i do have more of a soft spot for the original XC90 though... it was designed when volvo was still very much volvo and of course had that awesome b8444s engine as an option! anyone with a V8 XC90 or S80 can essentially say i'm driving a naturally aspirated detuned Noble M600 lol
I must've slept thru those models because I can't remember any. Lol
That sounds cool to me. 🏆
ahh so not the V8 model i take it XD

One of my best customers has THREE cars with that V8, two XC90s and an S80. I've become an accidental master of both XC90s and the 4.4....
Its a fun sounding engine though, not the smoothest thing every and Haldex AWD has that delay if you floor it but overall it's a good match to the trucks and quite nice indeed in the car
As far as slow goes my Jeep currently has a "redline" of 3000 rpm due to a failed headgasket, been that way for about 3 years now so 0-60 is about 19-24 seconds. It requires planning of a high degree if you need to merge and is the definition of disorienting when I have to use it for something because it's so so slow and relaxed feeling.

Oh trust me you don't miss it. Dear god I'm so tired of working on them and it's BAD packaging lol!

a) Fix it.
b) Get rid of it.
there’s no way I could put up with something that slow! Lol And I’m not a speed demon.
You are right though, I need to fix it but if I touch it I will end up throwing a cam into it with head porting and fully rebuild the trans. The whole curse of "if I am going to bother at all I will do it right"
but what're some common problems with that volvo V8? an XC90 with that engine is something i've considered for a used SUV purchase at some point
My sister had a rental from enterprise. It leaked about a quart of oil at my house😡. I went with her to turn it back in and the enterprise guy that looked over it I pointed out that it had a substantial oil leak and he even bent down and saw it had already began to drip again. He said we’ll get it checked out.
Less than 5 minutes later he was handing those same keys to another renter. My sister knew the people getting her old rental, and I told them hey it’s leaking oil pretty bad. These rental companies don’t check/care.

Just like when I had a rental Q5, it called for 91 gas and I put 87 in it. 100% believe the rental company also ran 87 gas in it. Matter of fact I received the rental Q5 with a half tank of gas. For the 2900 miles I had it, it saw 87.
I’m certain it saw 87 after I turned it back in.

My cousin works for a company that maintain rental cars. I asked him do they actually maintain them? He said yes. Personally, all of his previous vehicles have all broken down and never came back to life. His truck has been sitting up for months in need of a transmission. He doesn’t work on anyone else cars in the family.
