VTEC literally has a 3rd, more aggressive cam in between the 2 standard cam lobes that gets engaged... VTEC is either on or off

variable valve timing is well, variable lol... in the case of the corolla and matrix XRS with VVTL-i that really is more like VTEC where the cam profile suddenly switches at a certain RPM
Sorry, I should have used the word "similar"

One thing that is not being discussed in this conversations is eventually all forms of the Toyota/Lexus V8's are going away to be replaced by either the ttV6 or four cylinder hybrids. Most consumers don't really care, in fact a lot of people on this forum own them and praise them. Two members in particular have expressed that they love their Tundras. But there seems to be a subset of members who don't want to own anything else if it's not a V8. So what's going to happen when the IS500, LC500, LCF are discontinued? Are those people going to give in and buy hybrids or "die on the hill" as some have said, or move to Ford and GM?

I will at some point have a facelift LS460 AWD in my collection with an Elate super kit so I can have German levels of power. That's why the V8s are a just have to me

Lexus VVT doesn't have that extra boost VTEC does.

Still my 430 absolutely rips at high RPMs.

Put her through her paces today.

What I meant is it works in a similar way. I can actually hear the cam profiles change in my Sienna when I floor it, and 100 percent I heard (and felt it) at high RPM's in my IS350 and V6 Camry

Oh, I knew what you meant.

Both Lexus cars have VVT but the Mercedes doesn't. But it does have dual intake runners which makes it sound just like a VTEC except it's 5.0 liter V8 . It opens up around 3300RPM.

Yukon is VVT I'm pretty certain.

All three of the cars I mentioned have VVT-i, if your mercedes has overhead cams (which I'm sure it does) it uses some type of Variable Valve timing

They do not, there is only single profile but the relative phase is altered to allow better cylinder fill % at high rpm without suffering down low or having a rough idle.

VTECH actually increases valve lift, what you are likely hearing in your van is the variable intake runners actuate to the short setting

It is, single plane. The only single cam engine with two plane VVT is the Viper, the system was invented solely for that engine to meet emissions. 1:1 type stuff and exotic as hell.

The viper is one of the few NA engines that can hit 1000hp at the crank if brought to the spec the engineers actually wanted

you'll never hear VVT-i working, at least not in the 1UZ... but if you mess with the intake you can clearly hear ACIS activate at 5000 rpm

Thank you. He brought it up to compare to a gas tundra not knowing I own one. I am still waiting on him produce a 1mill mile GAS domestic on its original engine and transmission.

I don’t think you’ll see that.
