I can’t imagine it is really tracked hard. There is all this controversy over the break-on period as the requirements change over the years according to the vehicle manual

 

I would defer to engine builders and gearbox makers on what to do not the carmaker. Transmissions and diffs don't like shock, engines don't like you taking it easy

 

The engine maker is the carmaker. Transmissions can be the same depending.

 

Engine builders as in machine shops etc, plus the handmade engines all get hot run before install so I'm sure they also agree.

 

An engine that is put together in a machine shop is totally different than an engine that is manufactured in a plant.

You're fine if you just drive the car normally or follow the carmaker's reccomendation

 

Yeah you're right on that for sure, machine shop engines are like the AMG stuff for everything instead of parts code matching. You are also right it's fine to follow what they say

I just put 91 in my truck on the way home from work today. It had half a tank of 85 remaining from my Utah trip over the 4th. So i'm probably running about 88 right now.

It's funny, when I drive the truck to work, everybody else volunteers to drive their car to lunch LOL.

 

If you read what I said above I actually said they suggest the break in procedure as well so you aren’t breaking new ground with this and I know that already.

Here is a post from the founder of the GTR forums and the owner of the very first Nismo GTR on why mileage varies on brand new GTRs with some having up to 100 miles on them when delivered to the dealers:

“The GTRs get I believe at one time had 9 test laps at the factory and that is for brake bedding suspension shake down noise and vibration checks ect. then the small drives off and on the ship and at port ect . so your typical GTR would have have 23+ miles on it when it arrives at the dealer then they gas it up so lets say anything 30 or under isnt very suspicious. 100 miles or so that is the dealer driving the car. im not sure how much these test laps have changed over the years but for a long time you wouldnt ever see a GTR come off the track to a dealer under 20 miles


ive told this little anecdoate before but my NISMO was used as quality control at the factory and it had like 70 miles of testing on it. the way I found that out is for the first gen NISMOs they do the testing with the standard exhaust then put the NISMO/SpecV on so the tips wouldnt burn in. there was a note on mine that said the exhaust was installed at 71 miles.”

 

Here is another post from the same guy, looks like it is driven hard at the factory:

“so here is the deal. yes the car is driven hard at the factory for 9 test laps and the engine is dynoed at high RPM to the point where is is "broken in". with that said the suspension is not settled( that is what you are asked to drive in comfort mode for more suspension stroke) and its not just engine the transmission isnt totally broken in. in the real world can you drive it off the lot as hard as you want with no repercussions? most likely. but there is a suggested break in listed by Nissan and is backed up by the engineers ive spoken with. after the first 300 miles the break in isnt even that intrusive at all. you bought a 120-130K car I would do it. and yes there is a check up required at 1K miles”
