Default Occasionally stuck in park

I have a 96LS400 that threw P0773 and P1765 several months ago. The car appears to shift fine, however on different occasions the car would net let me shift out of park. The issue seems related to the brake pedal as pressing hard on the pedal will oftenrelease it. I know that pressing the pedal is required to get out of park but is there an easy way to disable this lockout? I don't think my issue is related to the codes but I am not an expert. Thanks in advance.

the codes are trans related and should not be causing intermittent shifter movement.

there is a switch at the brake pedal to tell the shifter to release the shifter lock so you can move it. check that switch for proper engagement and function. you should be able to hear a slight "click" at the shifter when pressing the brake pedal (even before moving the shifter). that's the lock disengaging. of course all this needs to be done with the ignition in ON position.

also make sure there isn't crud or debris inside the shifter itself. drinks/dust/ash can make their way down there.

I did check but its hard to know if the switch is the failure. Is there a DIY for replacing it? I realize it looks straightforward but I often find that I break tabs, etc. when not prepared with a video. This is causing my wife a lot of headaches, and understandably he does not want to drive the car - neither would I. I also could not figure out how to remove the faux wood paneling around the shifter area to see what horrors exist under there. Any suggestions on both are greatly appreciated.

Unless already performed, I would confirm the brake switch function:

Because the brake pedal needs to be depressed for the shifter to unlock, the "Switch Pin Free" test needs to be confirmed (check the pin depressed condition as well). Don't discount an intermittent switch as you describe an intermittent lock/unlock shifter condition.

Also, check to make sure that the switch is adjusted so that when the brake pedal is depressed, the switch pin fully extends (is free).

If you just want to throw a new switch at it, they're cheap enough if you go aftermarket (vs. +$100 for OEM).

Thanks. I did see a video on how to test the switch. I will likely go ahead and order one, I am going to blowout the dust and crap around it. I assume the red circle is the nut I have to undue to get it out.

That was definitely the problem. I could not contort myself to get both hands in while on my back so I had a shop do it and they confirmed the bad switch and installed the new one.

Thanks for all the help.
