Default technique for usng Extractor machine on carpet

Years ago, I used one of those Bissel hand held carpet extractors to deep clean my carpet. It got them clean, the water kept coming up black even after 5 tanks. But it did a horrible job of getting enough water out of the carpet. It took weeks of airing it out overnight with the windows open until it dried enough. Still it would feel wet in spots and mold odors would start to form.

Is there a technique to deep cleaning with these consumer extractors or should I only do this with a professional machine.

Please share your recommendations.
Thanks

Never do water for every pass.

I typically do 3-4 passes for every water pass.

For every pass you spray water/solution depending on the type of extractor, you do 3-4 passes dry with no water. Especially with a LGM since its vac isnt the greatest.

Just wondering, would a good wet-drive shop vac help soak up some of the extra water in the carpets?
