Can you imagine the money that could be had for someone to put a patent on a product that would actually take the white-en stain off a painted car that had bird poop etched in the paint. Now there's an idea. Guess no-one has cause what can help acid? It's funny, I saw my nephews car today & he had bird poop on his hood & I said hey man, you need to get that stuff off like pronto. He said he was later & was going to use that Meriguires (sp?) scratch remover, said he's used it before & it works.
Your right though guitarman, I inherited mine from previous owner. The few I have are not that noticable unless your looking closely at the paint close up. My girlfriend keeps telling me I'm trying to make a 6 years old car brand new.
I agree with you that a fortune could be made, but the probable reason it hasn't is that it probably can't. The acids break down the resins in the paint, essentially destroying them by micro-cracking, i.e.eating away at them...and I'm not sure a chemist could reverse the laws of physics there. Even to hide them by recoloring them would be tough because the cracks are encapsulated in a solid resin system, so...how would you get to them or have it penetrate?
The only thing that works is removing( via abrasives) the etch if it's not too deep. Most are too deep, and when you remove the etching you see you are down to the basecoat already. Paint that is as thin as the width of a baby's hair doesn't leave much headroom for solving these problems.
I have been lucky on some minor etching, by wetsanding, but I've also seen it way too deep most of the time.
Neat idea though Xanadu, wish I could figure out a way myself. Then I could buy a Lex for everyone in the family.
