Default Door latch assembly question

The rod going from the outside handle to the latch is broken from the latch. The problem is NOT the two dollar clip that attaches the rod to the handle, the rod is broken at the bottom and won't attach to the latch. I would like to replace the rod without replacing the entire assembly (roughly 300 new). I can't find a separate part number online, and I doubt I will get any luck calling a dealer. I was hoping to be able to find someone parting out an SC to buy this rod from for cheap, but I don't know if it can be removed/replaced. It looks like it is supposed to have a ring at the bottom that attaches to a rod in the latch, can't really tell without removing the latch assembly, which looks pretty difficult. Does anyone know if the rod can be removed/replaced safely and easily? Anyone know of a nice diagram of the latch assembly so I can see what I'm actually dealing with here?

I would have never thought of that. I assumed the rod attached to the latch with a ring, but this makes more sense since it allows the mechanism to go down when the interior handle is used without pulling the rod down. Thanks a lot man. I don't know why I didn't find those threads (yours and the one mentioned in your thread). I guess I wasn't using the right words in the search. Again, thanks a lot man. I'll try to come up with something similar this weekend

You're very welcome. It's an easy DIY. Good luck!
