I thought about using that idea when i had a RB in my 240.
Found this on NICO.com GTR style. can't find any info about the company, there was a company that sold this style of intake but i cant find 'em now.
Found this universal one on ebay

Don't know about the advantages of it, unless your car has alot of HP.

I use a similar concept with a custom pipe I made for my RX300 with an exhaust shop I work with. However, my piece involves a tube with angled piece as shown. The idea here was that one piece leads to a entrance on the front bumper of my RX where the cool, ram air can enter. The side piece is to take in engine air. If I just have a straight piece of pipe without this side piece my engine chokes.
I have couple of variations of what I have done on page 6 of my cardomain page below.
However, the images that you have shown, I wouldn't be too optimistic since one can only pull in so much air in the engine bay (and hot at that). However, if you made one section a little bit longer than the other like my system, you could get some gains.
Cutting a hole in the airbox is a similar idea in this way.

haha my friend had a 96 civic a long time ago and we went to home depot and rigged twin filters into his stock dx engine for fun. Didn't even change the sound of it and i'm pretty sure it did nothing but let in more hot air. It was the most he ever did to that civic.
