Pohanka wants all your wampum...big time. Brakes on the LS could not be simpler to do and can be done in 30 min max per axle by any comp mechanic.

I got all 4 rotors and pads and did all the work myself in a hour and it cost 375. The rotors are oem with akibono gold pads and it stops way better then oem. To give you a idea how easy it is im 17 and this was my first time changing brakes and it took me a little less then an hour. so i would go that route if i were you

If you DIY, it can be done for $110 for both axles if your rotors aren't currently grabbing. If the are, I'd replace the rotors. Don't resurface...they'll start to grab even sooner due to less metal to absorb the heat. You can buy OEM rotors for $100 ea plus $10 for a pr of caliper bolts. The bolts are only $5 each (you need8 for the entire car). The LS430 is the easiest car to replace the pads. You only need needle nose pliers and a small C-clamp to remove the pads/pins, plus a small screwdriver to remove the pad thickness sensor.

Just traded in my 2001 LS430 which I have driven from 40k-280k! Never changed timing belt, water pump, or had the dealer do my brakes. Did buy off brand brakes and rotors ONCE, Learned my lesson. Toyota parts only! Just had a tire changed at the dealer and they wanted 1600 for timing belt and water pump on my 06 LS. That is crazy for 300 bucks in parts.

You guys are real helpful. I am told they have to turn the rotors just to cover their but I think.
Is there a lip on the rotors you have to be concerned at all about.

My last LS I ordered in new rotors versus turning them a second time, this LS no shakes shimmys at hard breaking I will just have em replaced and hope for the best. Its really that easy Alex?

Given the amazingly easy to work on brakes on LS430, a dealer charging $1040 for front and rear brakes pads and rotor resurface is close to robbery.

If you can't diy on this just order the Lexus OEM parts online and find a shop that will just charge you labor using brand new OEM parts that you supply. The pads can be ordered online for $100 total for both sets. In most cases the rotors do not need to be resurfaced. If your rotors are scored badly and you do have to dismount the rotors, 8 new caliper bolts avail on line for 38.40. Replacing bolts is recommended because the bolts are designed to be used one time as they stretch when they are torqued down per specs. Although lots of shops likely just reuse them if they look fine.

Brake jobs on the LS430 are the simplest of any car I have ever seen. So new pads and bolts run $138 in parts. btw if your rotors are warped and you need brand new OEM rotors, they can be order for 108/front and 140/rear each.

Charging $1040 for brake job is like charging $1500 to replace the spark plugs on the LS, another relatively simple job requiring only basis mechanical skills.'

The hardest part of LS430 brake job is jacking up this very heavy car, dealing with jack and jack stands, etc. to make sure car is safe and secure, and dismounting and remounting the heavy wheels (remount is a bear). The brake job itself is super easy.

If you factor 1 hour labor to do all brakes, and that's giving them plenty more time, at $100/hour, plus the parts cost for pads ($200), then $300 is TOPS absolutely to be done at a dealer. Turning the rotors add maybe another $50~60, so $360. Like Jabber said before, to charge $1500 is pure robbery. I know that you have to "pay to play" when you drive a luxury vehicle, but you can also learn to play smart, not just throw money out the window.

Ya might want to call a Yota dealer. The dealer I use is 189, pads, turn, bolts. I was at the Lexus dealer for a roadforce, my Yota dealer was busy, and know they charge 350 for the same thing same name chain dealership. Go figure.

They all insist to turn rotors I will tell em otherwise thanks.

I took your advice and did not turn the rotors. Neighbors kid works on motorcycles/cars, 50 bucks for front and rears, I threw him another 25 and good as new and he torqued the nuts. 58 bucks x 2 for OEM pads. When I got my first LS the Lexus dealer turned em and burned em, pulsed ever since.

The neighbors kid looked at the plugs and they all looked pretty accessible. Is their a gasket on the coil, can anything be damaged if you are not careful? He will torgue the plugs. Thanks again

Default Simple Task

Parts from Irontoad.com is the best route to go. I live in the Peoples Republic of Maryland and they generally ship my parts from a Lexus dealer in PA. Front rotors $102 each. Pair of front pads are $50. Caliper bolts are $4.80 each. You need four. All parts are OEM. I've tried non OEM and been less than impressed. Brakes on this car are very easy. Front wheel bearings are pretty easy as well. Rear wheel bearings are a B*$#H because there is a lot of stuff in the way. You WILL need help with the rear bearings. Not a solo job.

Default Don't Over Torque

Whatever you do don't over torque the bolts going into the aluminum casting. It's real easy to strip the threads. If you do that your are screwed big time. Spend the money on a good torque wrench from Snapon or Matco and don't leave it in the tool box wound up. That will ruin your wrench. Make sure you unload the wrench when you are done. You can send a Snapon or Matco back to the manufacturer and they will calibrate your wrench for a minor fee.
