Front strut dust boots and CPO

its only covered IF the strut is blown too. gives them a reason to replace it all. Dust boots are cheap but a pain in the *** to replace since it requires disassembling the strut assembly. Ive had a few cars that when they were torn i just left them because they dont really impact the performance of the shock if in good condition. It just helps for those offroad moments to not get dirt and grime all over the inner shock assembly. If your really patient, you can probably just sit under the wheel of the car and glue it back together and call it a day.

And BTW, they are not struts, they are shock absorbers.

Also to ANT, best bet is to remove the strut assembly and gauge the damage of the dust boot from there. Its not hard at all if you get a Suspension removal DIY. But if you have the whole assembly out you might as well replace the boot with a new one. NOT having/ broken boots will still allow you to drive the car problem free so its not a HUGE essential part like the axle boots. There is no lubricant inside the boot, just air so you have some time. I just wouldn't drive winter NY winter weather with out a boot with salt and what not so you have time. PM me if you need more help. Im in NY as well and can probably help you with the issue

The IS X50's use MacPhearson style suspension so technically it is a STRUT assembly (although a shock absorber is apart of the assembly) The car would be immobile with out the struts. Cars that use SHOCK ABSORBERS can technically still drive with out shocks since the spring is not apart of the shock assembly
SUSPENSION (FRONT)
Independent, double-wishbone, coil springs, gas-pressurized shock absorbers and stabilizer bar
SUSPENSION (REAR)
Independent, multilink with coil springs, gas-pressurized shock absorbers and stabilizer bar

I don't see any way that the suspension wouldn't collapse if I removed the strut from either the front or rear of my IS350. To me that makes it "an integral part of the suspension".
This from shockwarehouse.com, who I admit, are not the final authority.
I know when I see the spring wrapped around, I think "strut".

A Strut. Note the spring perch that holds the vehicle's coil spring, making the strut an integral part of the vehicle's suspension.

ok, I'll change my vote!
Found this which indicates that you can tell the difference by the lower end of the strut or shock. That would make ours shocks, not struts.
Of particular note is this
But I also kind of agree that it is a semantic issue. Does anyone really get confused if they look at your coilover and refer to it as a strut?

Putting a spring on a shock does NOT make it a strut

No it's not. They are very different. Double Wishbone is more complicated. I've had and worked on both.
