Default Question for those with nav override hack

I did the nav override on my GS350, but have noticed something odd. When I flip the switch I installed to engage the override, the system works as it should for about 45 seconds or so allowing me to enter a Nav destination, etc., while driving.

However, if I leave the switch on for more than say 45 seconds, the buttons on the LCD go back to being grayed out or not active as if I've turned the switch back off. Is anyone else who's done the hack with the switch installed experiencing the same thing? Anybody have a clue what's going on?

I get the same thing. If I flip the switch off for about 5 seconds then flip it back on it's fine to finish what I'm doing. At first I thought it was the switch, but I checked the switch and it was fine. I also think it logs an error in the log under the Nav setting when this happens, but I haven't taken the time to check by comparing timestamps. It may be unrelated, but that's the only thing I can think of that would cause the Nav errors I get.

I also accidently found that if I put in a destination, flip the switch, and forget about it I won't get turn by turn directions as expected, but it still will announce when I reach my destination.

What "log" are you talking about? Can it be cleared?

As far as the functions being grayed out after 45 seconds or so, this is normal... Because even if you disconnect the VSS speed wire (which is what your switch does) the nav unit is still receiving lat and lon ping data from the GPS satellite so it will eventually realize that you have moved and it will gray out... It happens faster if you are driving at highway speeds... If you are going slowly, like 25 mph, it can take almost 2-3 minutes before it will gray out...

Under the navigation check item I use clear code to clear the issues. They only show up since doing the modification.

Funky,
If you leave the switch off, do you get turn-by-turn direction? I don't get any voice until "I have arrived at the destination". I did the mod without the switch, meaning, I cut the purple wire (K46 pin#14). I can have the switch added if that will help me.

Worked like a charm... I had two error codes... One in nav and one in audio... Maybe cause I had a subwoofer installed...

Since clearing the errors none have surfaced in audio again...

Thanks

If you just cut the speed wire, you will lose nav accuracy, and hence your turn by turn directions... You really should install a switch so that after you've entered your destination, you can flip the switch so the nav can get the speed signal again...

I thought that cutting the speed wire would have no negative side effects. I guess I was wrong. What is the best place to install a switch?

Sorry been away this weekend, and swamped at work...

I installed my switch next to the ECT button under the arm rest next to the quarter/token holder. If you have a GS350 you should have a blank installed in the spot which just pops out. You definitely need the switch otherwise your nav is pointless without turn by turn directions.

I'll clear out the log next time I'm in the car and start recording when I flip the switch and when the errors occur to see if there is any correlation.

Check the "IS350 experience" website in my sig... It's my personal site (nothing fancy) and shows how/where I mounted my switch (among other nav hacks)... It know it's a different car (you have a GS) but still, it should give you an idea for your options...

Here's a link to another thread where we talked about available switches that look/fit like OEM...
