So i finally got a nice set of aftermarket wheels for the Sc. Unfortunately during the process of removing my stocks wheels, half of a stud snapped off and was stuck to the lug nut. 10 minutes later as i was driving off, 3 lugs flew off as i hit a speed bump (same wheel as the snapped stud). I currently have 2 bent studs and a snapped one on the front driver side. How do i go about replacing them, is it as simple as popping the bad studs out and replacing them? Any help will be appreciate it, thanks guys!
Are you using the right kind of lug nuts with your wheels?
Technically, the right way to do it is to use a stud pressing tool, but a friendly tap with a sledge hammer will knock the existing stud out.
Very simplified process is:
Remove calipers and rotor > align the stud you want to remove to the spot where the caliper would be > hit with sledge hammer > clean holes on hub > grease up the new stud > stack washer and use an open ended lugnut to torque the new stud into place.
Throwing the studs in the freezer while you remove the old ones will be helpful too.
I agree, something doesn't sound right with the stud/lug nut/wheel combo, for that many to have failed.
Tapping them out with a small sledge has worked well for me. If it's the rear wheel, it takes some pondering how to remove the studs, as they can't slip out like the fronts. I eventually found a small opening in the rear that you line each stud up with for removal. It takes a mild amount of finger dexterity.
I had a number of rusty studs on my first SC and was switching to extended studs in back, but I never had failures like described. I didn't grease the new studs ... never seen that recommended. They seat okay without lube, and I would think any potential movement when the wheels are off would make it un-worth the minimal risk.
This seems to be in the info I am after. My new to me 98 es300 came with these wheels 17". The ride was terrible so I went down to the 16"from an 03. What lug nuts do I order? The ones on the 17s are to dang long and stick out and look well yuk. Would an acorn type lug work?
