Thread bolt type differences

Anyone know the difference between 1/2"x20 aka 1/2" UNF thread bolts vs 12x1.5 which our cars come with?

yup, they are close enough to start to screw on, but far enough apart to completely destroy the threads...

asks for 12x1.5, better use 12x1.5
