I am ordering new set of 18x8.5 wheels with 245/40 all around. According to the calculation, the revolution and diameter are very close to my stock of 225/55/16, I am wondering, does that mean I can use my stock 16's as spare in times of need?
I see that the 'optimal' size for GS is 245/40F, 275/35R, so for those of you that have 235/40, or 265/35, or any other size combinations, what do you do about the speedometer/odometer reading error?
I dont' care about the readings on the meter, as much as having proper fitment of the wheel/tires. Or recent thread I read mentioned new wheel/tires may affect ABS, or other components of the car..., should these things be taken into consideration when getting new wheels,
It's always good to have a matching spare. Aside form the reason you mentioned - what if your wheels become discontinued (because they all do eventually) and you get an unfortunate curb scrape or some other blemish that just bothers you - do you spend 3-4 grand on new rims or just swap with the spare. FYI I have a matching spare and my rims have since been discontinued.
Sorry, I should clarify. I was just thinking, during an emergency, tire blowout, flats..etc, can i temporarily use my stock 16's as a spare, being that they are very similar in diameter. However, if i went with different tire sizes, like 235/40, then I can't use my stock 16's as spare due to the size difference?
This is all on temporary basis, not permanent replacements.
It's probably okay for a temporary basis - on the rear it could cause issues for the limited slip due to a potentially different diameter overall, but again only if you do it for a long period of time (weeks at a time).
