I just had new Kumho's puy on. I went with the original 235-45 in frony. On the rear I used 265-40. There is no overhang on the rim at all. The tire is about 1 inch wider then the front. These are mountef on the stock 17" rims.

Did you wear out the stock tires already ? Please post updates on what you think of the new tires and how the staggered concept works out. I only have 7500 miles on the stock tires and have not experienced any problems with them so far. It will probably be another year before I switch. Thanks for the info so far.

I assume you are talking about the Ecsta Supra 712 I looked up the tire specs and the thread width is 8.5" front and 10" rear. The dia. of the tires front and rear are identical 25.3, same as the side walls 4.2". They also have a good thread wear rating of 280. I will have to start finding problems with my stock tires so I can come up with an excuse to switch sooner.

Just for clarification guys. A 255 WILL NOT work up front! It is too large and any of the fellow mems. will atest to this. I have ran 245/40/18 (which I sold) and now I'm back to 245/40/17 with stock wheels while I wait for my 19's to get here. And let me tell you in both 245's I ran above, you could barely squeeze a Quarter between the tire and the suspension components on the GS!!! So although a 245 is THE MAX you can put up front, I'm actually gonna drop down to 235/35/19 on an 8 in wheel (up front & 265/30/19 with a 9in. out back) to reduce ANY chances of problems down the road! Good Luck!

In all honesty, you are speaking of 18's and 19's which blurs your point at first, however, if you are confirming that a 255/40/17 won't fit on the stock wheel up front, then that is the way it is I guess. Where does it rub? Increasing the wheel diameter could lead to this, but decreasing the height and increasing the width by 1/2" or less (as the 255/40/17 does) I don't see how it can possibly touch anything.

Not 255/45/17s, but 255/40/17, which I am running, which is actually a smaller diameter.

I'm running 255/40/17 in the rear only, so far, to clarify. I have read good things about the Kuhmos, and they come in the combos we need.

I put 265-40-17 on the rear and 235-45-17 on the front. They are the same diameter. I couldn't beat the price. $540 installed for the Kumho's 712.

Can you post a picture from the back, so I can see the tires?

Well in all honesty my friend, I am never going to say "never" and I certainly don't doubt you if you are running those posted sizes. Since I have not "personally & physically" attempted the 255 application, I can't & won't say it's immpossible! But this has been the general consensus since I can remember. But it's all good!

I'm pretty sure your 540i had staggered rim sizes though - wider rims on the back.

Frankly, putting wider tires on the rear rims if they're the same all around is lame because the wheel will STILL look inset, in fact even worse, as the fatter tire 'donuts' out from the rim.

I want to stagger to put wider thread on the back to get better dry traction. I do not think you would have any visual "donut out from the rim effect" as you put it. If HDDeuce is able to post pictures we will be able to see what they look like.

If you're staggering, it will look great. What I don't get is the discussion on keeping the SAME width rims all around and putting fatter tires on the back.

I have to park on the street and have no time or room for multiple sets of wheels. The current stock 235/45/17s up front and 255/40/17 in the rear gave me the extra traction the very next time I took it to the strip.

And a little bit of bulge on the wheel looks good to me, as on the BMWs. The 235/45/17 is actually a little undersized, and slopes in a bit. When it comes time for new tires on the stock 17's, I'm doing 245/45/17 up front, 265/40/17 to the rear.
