This may a dumb question but what is the purpose on centering rings. I have heard people talk about them but what is the purpose. Thanks for your replies.

 

ummm, this is going to be a short explanation. if you take out your wheel and look at the rotor hat area, you see that the center part there is a little ring shape thing that sticks out?

now look back on the back of the wheel, on the center, you see a hole. in the ideal world, you want the hole to be the exact size as the ouside cicumference, so when the wheel fit on it, it goes on right in the middle, then you put on lug nuts, etc... the wheel is called hub centric

now sometimes the hole at the back of the wheel are larger, so when you fit the wheel on, the wheel is not completely centered. so when you put the lug nuts on, you actually have to jiggle the wheel around to get it fit. the wheel is now called lug centric.

the down side of lug centric is that the wheel is very hard to be centered, and a lot of times, when driving, might development vibration, not a good thing.

so there comes the hub centric ring. it's a ring that you put on the back of the wheel, and makes the hole "smaller" so it fits right on the hub, this will make the wheel hub centric again. and thus the name.

if you get a good hub, it can help to reduce most of the vibration you get when driving. though from my experience, not all

In addition, most wheels are not hub-centric.
To my understanding HRE Wheels are hub-centric, IFORGED wheels need a ring.

 

For a small fee you can get the iForged hub centric as well.

Since I put new rims on I have a chatter in my brake pedal when I brake from about 50mph. Is rhis a sympton that I may need the centering rings, or is this caused by the larger rims and tires.

 

The vibration can be caused also by an unbalanced tire and wheel, but a LUG centric fit can ride as you described also.

PS Rom gave a good explaination but I wanted to add that a fit with rings is not really a bad thing, it's only bad if you need rings and like, you aint got em.

anyway, the vibraton you have, it could be wheel balance, the hub rings (missing of), tire wear, warpped rotors, or maybe you didn't tighten up the lug nuts to the right spec (about 76 to 80lb) and in the star fashion?
